Repairs/rebuilds mechanical drive systems including, but not limited to, replacement of drive bearings, shafting, blower wheel assemblies, multi-pulley and belt drives, and exhaust blower assemblies and motors for HVAC equipment. 2. Maintains and repairs hot and cold-water pumping systems including motor replacement, bearing and shaft seal replacement, mounting and alignment techniques for proper operation, and replacement of rubber and chain drive couplings; repairs and rebuilds triple duty valve/Y strainer assemblies; checks valves, air and sludge separators, air bleeds and water treatment, air scavenging, and sludge removal. 3. Maintains and repairs cooling towers, evaporator condensers, and air-cooled condensers; maintains, repairs, and replaces fills elements, water distributors, filter screenings, piping, electrical components, and control operations. 4. Maintains hot water boiler operation, including electronic and mechanical safety, primary and secondary pump systems and boiler ignition controls, chilled water systems operations, water flow dynamics, and piping-pumping configurations. 5. Maintains and repairs, as necessary, gas fired furnaces, infra-red heaters, and hydraulic systems. 6. Works and meets with contractors and vendors obtaining estimates, evaluations, reports, and pricing, and provides recommendations accordingly. 7. Attends and participates in pre-construction meetings for assigned projects and work. 8. Responds to emergency electrical and plumbing calls; assists other co-workers as required; may serve as contact person in the absence of the supervisor; provides instruction on the use and operation of HVAC equipment; monitors HVAC over DDC/EMS computer systems; updates and maintains service logs. 9. Participates in District-provided in-service training programs. 10. Performs other related duties as assigned; specific duties not listed does not exclude them for this classification if the work is similar or related. Conditions of Employment: CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT: SALARY: Salary grades consist of nine steps. A new employee is normally placed on Step 1 of the grade. Changes in step placement take place on the first day of the first month following the anniversary date of attaining permanent classified employee status until the maximum of the grade is reached. HOLIDAYS: There are 13 holidays observed each year. A pro-rata reduction will be made for employees working less than full-time and less than twelve months. VACATION: Employees are granted 12 days of vacation per year through the first five years of service to the District; 15 days after completion of five continuous years of service to the District; and 22 days after completion of 10 continuous years of service to the District. This computation is based on full-time, twelve-month employment. A pro-rata reduction will be made for employees working less than full-time and less than twelve months. SICK LEAVE: One day of sick leave for each month of service is granted. This is based on full-time, twelve-month employment. A pro-rata reduction will be made for employees working less than full-time and less than twelve months. There is no limit to the number of days of sick leave which may be accrued. FRINGE BENEFITS: The District provides a health and welfare benefit package for employees and legal qualifying dependents. Warren Wilson College is one of <a href="https://www.workcolleges.org/" target="_blank">nine work colleges in the country</a>, where all residential students are required to work on campus, and in exchange they receive money towards their tuition. Warren Wilson receives an annual grant of $2 million from the U.S. Department of Education that helps support the meaningful work experiences in which students engage.
In addition to the 1,100-acre campus classroom, laboratory, and library of natural resources which include managed forests, and native wilderness, students learn on a working farm, running a mixed crop and livestock operation with a commitment to sustainable practices which in turn provides public educational opportunities for the wider community.
Every student at Warren Wilson is also required to do community engagement, where they volunteer in the community. Focused on addressing social and environmental justice issues, Warren Wilson students are supported by the Center for Community Engagement and annually, complete over 50,000 hours with local, national, and global communities.
Leadership &amp; Governance Dr. Damián J. Fernández is the 10th president of Warren Wilson College, assuming leadership on June 1, 2023.
A Cuban immigrant and first-generation college student who grew up in Puerto Rico, Fernández comes to Warren Wilson with more than 30 years of experience in teaching and leadership positions at both private and public institutions.
Chair of the Board Lach Zemp said, “Dr. <a>Fernández</a> brings a wealth and depth of experience in higher education that is in perfect alignment with the values instilled in our students from Warren Wilson’s long legacy of excellent academics, service to community and the importance of work.”
Fernández’s aspirations for Warren Wilson College include advancing innovative programs that deepen project- and problem-based learning, growing and diversifying enrollment, addressing facilities and other institutional needs, and rethinking the traditional business model of liberal arts colleges.
“Warren Wilson’s foundational commitment to access and its pedagogy of mind, heart, and hand—learning, service, and work—are as compelling now as in 1894,” Fernández said. “Together we will push the boundaries of experiential learning for the 21st century. Fernández received his bachelor’s from the Woodrow Wilson School of Public and International Affairs at Princeton University, master’s in Latin American Studies from the University of Florida, and Ph.D. in International Relations from the University of Miami.
