 POSITION SUMMARY: The Occupational Therapist (OT) develops and provides occupational therapy services to referred patients and serves as a patient advocate in the Therapy Department.

Establishes and instructs parents/caregivers in patient-specific home exercise programs. • Participates in discharge planning. • Secures necessary durable medical equipment and adaptive equipment for patients to facilitate independence. • Serves as a clinical preceptor for affiliating Occupational Therapy or Occupational Therapy Assistant schools. • Communicates and coordinates clinical service department functions with other departments to achieve cohesion and effectiveness. • Communicates with the DOR regarding department programs, goals, objectives, problems, and successes. • Complies with state regulations and national standards as they apply to the practice of Occupational Therapy. • Demonstrates knowledge of Occupational Therapy equipment utilized in different procedures and modalities, for example, traction, ultrasound, E-Stim, etc. • Utilizes resources appropriately and uses/maintains equipment to prolong working life. • Accesses and checks webmail each shift when working to keep informed of current events. • Performs other duties as assigned. EDUCATION: • Graduate of a Bachelor's level program in Occupational Therapy.
 
EXPERIENCE: • Minimum of one year of experience working in an IP and OP setting in the areas of developmental disabilities and neurological/orthopedic conditions. • Experience in feeding and swallowing treatment and evaluations preferred, including use of E-Stim for swallowing.

Miracle Kids Success Academy (MKSA) &amp; Kids Unlimited Learning Academy (KULA) is an early intervention day treatment clinic for children with special needs. Once children are referred to MKSA/KULA by their primary care physicians, they must receive a developmental screening. Then, they may be scheduled for therapy evaluations at MKSA/KULA or bring recent therapy evaluation reports done elsewhere. To receive Early Intervention Day Treatment habilitation services, a child must have a documented developmental disability or delay, as shown on the results of an annual comprehensive developmental evaluation and qualify for at least one therapy service. Those services include (but are not limited to) fine motor delays, sensory disorders, gross motor delays, speech-language delays, hearing disorders, feeding disorders, developmental delays, cognitive delays and medical needs.
Children are placed in treatment rooms based on their developmental needs and ages. Our treatment rooms are adequately staffed with teachers and teachers' assistants and are designed to celebrate the cultural differences of the children and families we serve. MKSA/KULA has many licensed occupational therapists, physical therapists, and speech-language pathologists on staff to provide needed care to the children who qualify for therapy services. And, MKSA/KULA has nurses on staff to serve children with medical needs.
MKSA/KULA's services also include developmental/psychological testing by a licensed psychologist, nutritional evaluations and consultations, and audiological evaluations. Our whole treatment team works together and with our patients' families to make sure each child's needs are met.

Activities of this position are patient focused and utilize assessment, planning, intervention, and evaluation in accordance with occupational therapy standards, physician orders, and governing policies and procedures. Areas treated: Primarily outpatient but do float to acute care sometimes. ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES Evaluates the patient’s function by performing formal/informal testing measures to determine the skeletal, neurological, respiratory, cardiovascular status, developmental, social, and cognitive functions. Develops a goal specific treatment regime based on assessment data and the patient’s tolerance to carry-out the treatment plan as prescribed. Submits a written treatment regime to be included as part of the plan of treatment authorized by and coordinated with the physician. Updates plan of care as needed to reflect changes in patient status. Co-signs verbal orders received by occupational therapist assistant as necessary. Devises a schedule of treatment, which is frequency and duration specific to be discussed with patient/family/caregiver and coordinated with clinical support staff. Educates patient, family, and/or caregiver regarding pathology or condition, patient alternatives, prognosis, and rationale for treatment through forms of rest, exercise, modalities, and other indicated interventions. Provides supervision for Occupational Therapist Assistants, Home Health Aides, and students per affiliate and regulatory standards. OTHER DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES: Recommends adaptive/supportive equipment based on assessment; contacts appropriate representative and/or supplier to place order and assists in securing equipment for patient. Documents the patient/family/caregiver response to treatment and changes in patient condition per affiliate documentation policies and/or standards and in compliance with regulatory agencies. JOB DESCRIPTION Completes daily documentation necessary for billing procedures per affiliate policy and in compliance with regulatory agencies Provides treatment intervention and demonstrates competence to facilitate or restore optimal functioning specific to therapist’s patient care area. Educates patient/family/caregiver in home education program using relevant and effective teaching methods. Demonstrates effective oral and written communication with all internal and external customers to maximize quality of patient care including coordination with interdisciplinary team members. Promotes education and development among staff, students, and other health care providers using relevant and effective teaching methods. Promotes process improvement. Assists with program development. Participates in team conferences and interdisciplinary meetings as appropriate. Promotes occupational therapy within Facility and service area, participating in and providing community education. Function as case manager for assigned cases. Demonstrates commitment to Facility and specific affiliate mission as evidenced by customer service, quality of service, and teamwork.
