Description
Under the indirect supervision of the attending physicians, performs diagnostic and therapeutic procedures utilizing radiopharmaceuticals in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases. The Nuclear Medicine Technologists maps radiopharmaceuticals using a camera, measures radioactivity using Geiger counters, monitors wipe tests and dose calibrations, and administers radionuclide dosages. This position reports to the department Manager or Director of Imaging Services and is responsible for observing all radiation safety regulatory requirements.

Summary/Objective:

The Nuclear Medicine Technologist prepares, administers and measures radioactive isotopes in diagnostic cardiac studies using a variety of radioisotope equipment. The Nuclear Medicine Technologist is responsible for preparing stock solutions of radioactive materials and calculating doses to be administered by cardiologists. 

Essential Functions:

<li>Administers radiopharmaceuticals intravenously to detect or treat cardiac related diseases, using radioisotope equipment, under direction of a cardiologist.</li>
<li>Calculates, measures and records radiation dosage or radiopharmaceuticals received, used, and disposed, using computer and following physician’s prescription. </li>
<li>Ensures and maintains quality control in regard to patient care and equipment usage.</li>
<li>Performs quality control checks on laboratory equipment, meters, and/or cameras, log into system, follow appropriate procedures for addressing and documenting issues.</li>
<li>Maintains and calibrates radioisotope and laboratory equipment; send out for calibration as needed</li>
<li>Disposes of radioactive materials and stores radiopharmaceuticals, following radiation safety procedures. </li>
<li>Processes cardiac function studies, using computer. </li>
<li>Prepares radiopharmaceuticals, adhering to safety standards that minimize radiation exposure to workers and patients.</li>
<li>Records and processes results of procedures.</li>
<li>Explains test procedures and safety precautions to patients and provide them with assistance during test procedures.</li>

Minimum Education, Skills, and Abilities

<li>Current ARRT(N) and/or NMTCB or related certification.</li>
<li>Minimum of two (2) years of full-time clinical experience in nuclear medicine technology or related field (Radiopharmacy, Radiation Physics, Radiation Safety, or Instrumentation)</li>
<li>Strong communication skills and a commitment to student success.</li>
<li>Ability to work with diverse student populations.</li>
<li>Ability to communicate and facilitate learning effectively and work collaboratively;</li>
<li>Ability to read, analyze, and interpret general business periodicals, professional journals, technical procedures, or governmental regulations;</li>

<li>Prepares and administers contrast material orally, by enema, or under close supervision of radiologists, intravenously but not independently; as required by procedure or patient’s condition, monitors vital signs (blood pressure and heart rate), and reports any significant changes to a radiologist</li>
<li>Lifts, positions, pushes, and transfers patients, supplies, and/or equipment as needed</li>
<li>Performs related clerical duties such as sending images to PACS, archiving images, and case editing of computer requests and reports</li>
<li>As required, maintains records and enters patient information into the computer through the use of the Radiology Veterans Information Systems and Technology Architecture (VISTA) package</li>

Qualifications
