OVERVIEW

Charge Nurse Cardiac Progressive Care

Job Summary:
The Charge Nurse is a Registered Nurse with unit lead responsibilities for patient flow and adjustment of unit staffing to meet the dynamic needs of the patients. The Charge Nurse will use the nursing process to make ongoing evaluations of patients' acuity, assessments of the staff nurses’ workload, and anticipate fluctuations in admissions, discharges and transfers. The facilitation of patient flow includes triaging and prioritizing admissions and overseeing the care coordination of patients being discharged/transferred. Daily nurse staffing includes employing effective decision-making behaviors that are used to safely balance changes in patient acuity and census with the availability, experience and competency of the staff nurses, to ensure safe and adequate staffing for all shifts. The Charge Nurse will demonstrate resourcefulness, tactful communication, flexibility, adaptability, decisiveness and awareness of the global needs of the hospital. The Charge Nurse will be a clinical leader and resource on the unit, collaborating with the interdisciplinary team to facilitate patient care stay progression and unit goals. The Charge Nurse will assume a patient assignment as determined by the needs of the unit. As appropriate and/or delegated by the Nurse Manager, the Charge Nurse monitors and intervenes in addressing opportunities for assuring regulatory compliance, quality effectiveness and satisfactory patient experience. When working as a clinical Staff RN the Charge Nurse is a practitioner who is responsible for assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating nursing care for an identified group of patients in an inpatient environment. This individual demonstrates competency in delivery of care to a primarily adult population. The Staff RN-Inpatient job description has incorporated essential functions which are adapted from the ANA Nursing: Scope and Standards of Practice, 2nd Edition (2010). 
EXPERIENCE DESCRIPTION: 
Clinical competence and experience in the care and management of target patient populations specific to area of employment are required. A minimum of 2 years of related clinical experience is required, unless approved by the Unit Manager. If applying for a Critical Care position, you must have 2 years of Critical Care experience, unless approved by the Unit Manager. 
EDUCATION DESCRIPTION: 
Bachelor's Degree in Nursing is required. Will consider current Froedtert Health non-BSN prepared RNs with demonstrated leadership skills that have at least 2 years’ experience in an acute care setting and formal commitment and plan to obtain a Bachelor’s Degree in Nursing within 5 years of starting in role. If an incumbent is functioning as a Charge RN as of June 1, 2016, and has 2-3 years’ experience in this role the Bachelors Degree in Nursing educational requirement may be waived.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES The following duties and responsibilities generally reflect the expectations of this position but are not intended to be all inclusive
<ul>
<li>Maintain provider and staff schedules</li>
<li>Inventory management for ASC</li>
<li>Daily operations management</li>
<li>Management and oversight for all procedural staff</li>
<li>Maintain accreditation standards and over see all administrative duties required by The Joint Commission.</li>
<li>Provide ongoing patient information to the interventionalist and clinical team during procedures to deliver vascular care to the patient including but not limited to cardiac monitoring, Aldrete score, pain status</li>
<li>Monitor patient vitals (HR, BP, O2Sat, EKG) during procedures</li>
<li>Maintain radiation safety when C-Arm is in use in the procedure room</li>
<li>Assist in procedure room preparation; maintain sterile techniques in the procedure room; assist with pre- and post-procedures including assessment of discharge</li>
<li>Assist in recovery room patient care following vascular procedures</li>
<li>Gather patient clinical information prior to procedures including patient assessments and patient history</li>
<li>Keep clear and accurate patient medical records</li>
<li>Maintain up-to-date narcotic drug log</li>
<li>Assist inventory manager in maintaining inventory count</li>
<li>Observe all OSHA and radiation safety monitoring policies</li>
</ul>
MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS (Education, licenses, certifications, and experience required to fulfill the essential duties, include computer skills as required)
<ul>
<li>Current RN license in state of practice required</li>
<li>Minimum of 5 (five) years clinical experience in critical care, interventional radiology, or medical/surgical required</li>
<li>Minimum of two (2) years managerial or administrative experience required</li>
<li>OBL or ASC experience preferred</li>
<li>Moderate Sedations experience preferred</li>
<li>Basic Life Support (BLS) certification required</li>
<li>Advanced Cardiac Life Support (ACLS) required</li>
<li>Basic computer skills and proficiency in MS Word required</li>
</ul>

LANGUAGE SKILLS Fluent in the written and verbal skills necessary to perform successfully the essential functions, duties, and responsibilities of the position

<li>Ability to read, speak, and write English with clarity of expression sufficient to communicate technical and complex concepts of teammates, patients, and patient family members in clear and easily understandable terms required</li>
<li>Ability to understand clinical/medical vocabulary written or spoken in English required.</li>

PHYSICAL DEMANDS Physical requirements can vary. These must be reviewed with management. In general, the position requires the following physical activities:

<li>Ability to lift a minimum of 5 pounds to a maximum of 35 pounds un assisted; able to stand for extended periods of time and to perform repetitive stooping, walking, stretching, reaching, with some sitting; full range of body motions required to lift patients, wear a lead apron, and lift supplies</li>
<li>Manual dexterity and ability to work rapidly required</li>
<li>Ability to perform patient transfers and positioning of patients up to 200 pounds unassisted; seek assistance for any patient over 200 pounds</li>
<li>Ability to lift and move patient transport devices</li>
<li>Ability to push/pull up to 50 pounds</li>
