The Goose Creek Rural Fire Department is a combination paid/volunteer fire department in Berkeley County, South Carolina. Our primary coverage area is the unincorporated areas of Goose Creek. We provide full-time coverage with both part-time and volunteer staff. We protect a district of over 600 residential homes, 5 shopping centers, 3 schools, 13 apartment complexes, 11 industrial facilities, and a population of over 20,000. We provide free training to members ranging from entry level to advanced for all positions in the department. Once basic training is completed, all members are required to work a specific number of shifts in the station.

Job Position Description
The position of Part-Time Firefighter is an entry level position. All personnel will be required to complete six (6) months of probation regardless of their level of training. The Part-Time Firefighter is responsible for responding to emergency calls relating to fires, hazardous materials, rescues, emergency medical incidents, and perform station duties as assigned by the supervisor. In addition to emergency related incidents, the Part-Time Firefighter is responsible for promoting Fire Prevention and general safety to the residents of the district.

JOB SUMMARY:
Under the general direction of the assigned supervisor, the Firefighter/EMT position responds to emergency fire, rescue and medical incidents; provides support functions, including vehicle and equipment maintenance, emergency responses, records and reporting duties, and emergency medical treatment including but not limited to medical emergencies, trauma emergencies and inter facility transports. Additionally, this position is expected to plan, organize, direct and control fire/rescue and medical service functions within applicable laws, codes, rules and regulations. This position is expected to provide emergency firefighting, rescue and basic level medical care to the residents of the community. All Fire department staff have frequent contact with outside emergency response agencies, other city or department staff, and the general public.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

This position works in emergency conditions that may involve extreme danger and exertion under hazardous conditions to include but not limited to flames, smoke, hazardous materials, cramped conditions, charged or oxygen deficient atmospheres, downed power lines, victims with severe injuries/death and inclement weather. Employee will generally be assigned to rotating shifts, consisting of 48 hours on duty followed by 96 hours off duty. This position must be able to wear all assigned bunker gear and perform related emergency scene duties effectively and efficiently. The incumbent must be able to frequently lift and carry heavy weights, climb, walk, run, drive vehicles, crawl, stoop, push, pull, jump, grasp hoses, grasp and manipulate small objects, work on unsteady footing and use other emergency and firefighting equipment as required. Must have the ability to regularly lift and/or move up to 30 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 165 with or without assistance. Must be able to see in the normal visual range with or without correction and have a level of vision sufficient to read computer screens and printed documents and to operate equipment. Job Summary: Firefighter / EMT shall be under the immediate supervision of their company officer. Their foremost and primary responsibility is to respond as part of a company to fire and other emergency incidents to suppress fire, rescue victims, provide emergency medical care and perform other duties as required to mitigate the incident.  Knowledge, Skills, &amp; Abilities: - Must have the knowledge of modern firefighting practices, principles and procedures including fire suppression, salvage and overhaul, ventilation, hydraulics, rescue, and operation of firefighting tools and equipment. - Shall have knowledge of fire department rules, regulations and standard operating procedures or the ability to learn said items during the probationary period. - Ability to perform hazardous, physically and mentally demanding tasks for prolonged periods of time. - Should have the ability to communicate fire safety information to the public in both written and verbal communications. - Delivery of emergency medical care in the form of basic life support. - Must have the ability to maintain good working relationships with other firefighters, supervisors, and the public. - Shall have the ability to exercise good judgment and react under stressful conditions.
 
 Emergency Response: Firefighter/ EMT may be exposed to hazardous conditions during tactical fire ground and EMS activities on a 24-hour basis. Possible strenuous physical activities related to tactical field activities may be required. The following are examples of activities associated with this position. Must be physically capable and medically approved to perform the necessary duties of firefighters in accordance with State laws. Shall, as a member of a two-person crew, have the strength and range of motion to lift a 200-pound patient from the ground, a bed, or from a vehicle: either supported by immobilization equipment or unsupported. Shall, as a member of a two-person crew, have the strength and range of motion to lift a 200-pound patient on an ambulance stretcher from the ground position to the load position, and into ambulance. Shall have the physical ability and dexterity to perform the medical care skills included in the EMT curriculum and Department EMS SOP in such standard scenarios as a supine or prone patient on the ground, in a bed, or in a vehicle.

Spend extensive time outside exposed to the elements Tolerate extreme fluctuations in temperature while performing duties. Must perform physically demanding work in hot (up to 400 degrees F), humid (up to 100%) atmospheres while wearing equipment that significantly impairs body-cooling mechanisms. Experience frequent transitions from hot to cold and from humid to dry atmospheres. Work in wet, cold, or muddy areas. Perform a variety of tasks on slippery, hazardous surfaces such as on rooftops or from ladders. Work in areas where sustaining traumatic or thermal injuries is possible. Face exposure to carcinogenic dusts such as asbestos, toxic substances such as hydrogen cyanide, acids, carbon monoxide, or organic solvents either through inhalation or direct skin contact. Face exposure to infectious agents such as hepatitis B or HIV, etc. Wear personal protective equipment that weighs approximately 50 pounds while performing firefighting tasks. Perform physically demanding work while wearing positive pressure breathing equipment. Perform complex tasks during life-threatening emergencies. Work for long periods of time, requiring sustained physical activity and intense concentration. Face life or death decision during emergency conditions. Be exposed to grotesque sights and smells associated with major trauma, burn victims and fatalities. Make rapid transitions from rest to near maximal exertion without warm-up periods. Operate in environments of high noise, poor visibility, limited mobility, at heights, and in enclosed or confined spaces. Use Manual and power tools in the performance of duties. Rely on senses of sight, hearing, smell and touch to help determine the nature of the emergency, maintain personal safety, and make critical decisions in a confused, chaotic, and potentially life-threatening environment throughout the duration of the operation.

The Pasadena Fire Department is an all-volunteer organization. If you would like to apply for membership in our Department you must be 18 years of age, live within 5 minutes from the closest station, have a valid Texas driver's license, and good driving record. All candidates must pass a background investigation, physical examination, and agility course before being accepted into the Fire Training Academy. 
About the Academy 
During the 10 to 12-week Academy, you will participate in classroom instruction, and hands-on. Also, you will receive basic training in firefighting (i.e. hose handling, pump operations, emergency driving, extinguishers, firefighter safety, etc.) 
The Academy is every Tuesday and Thursday (6 p.m. to 10 p.m.) and every Saturday (8 a.m. to 5 p.m.). 
Assignment 
Upon successful completion of the Academy and acceptance into the Department, you will be assigned to your Station and provided the equipment necessary to perform your duties as a firefighter. You will respond to fires in your District and participate in monthly, ongoing training. You will have the opportunity to participate in additional training offered by outside agencies, such as Municipal Fire School at A&amp;M and the Harris County Fire Fighters Association Field Days.

Volunteer Firefighters serve as part of Riley County Fire District #1 (RCFD1) by responding to a wide variety of situations, ranging from emergencies that immediately threaten life or property to routine citizen requests for assistance. Volunteer Firefighters perform within the scope of the policies and guidelines of RCFD#1 and Riley County and perform duties in the following general categories: Fire suppression, emergency medical service, rescue, hazardous material responses, training and public education. The Volunteer Firefighter operates under the supervision of an officer(s) and is expected to function effectively as part of a highly trained team.
Volunteer Firefighters support the department in all activities including emergency response, training, maintenance, and other activities. Volunteer Firefighters are expected to respond from home or work to emergency calls when available.
