Location:&nbsp; MA’s staff&nbsp; works remotely within the United States, with most of the team based on the East Coast. Periodic domestic travel for staff gatherings, court appearances, case development, fundraising events, and other professional reasons is required.&nbsp;

Background:
MA's movement-centered mission works with and for diverse Muslim and historically marginalized communities to build community power, fight systemic oppression, and demand shared wellbeing. We work in coalition with grassroots and community-based partners to dismantle discriminatory systems, including systems of state surveillance, mass incarceration, detention and deportation, and family regulation. We also work to defend movements from targeted state repression related to their principled dissent.&nbsp; Recognizing the limitations of any singular strategy, we use a combination of public education, policy work, systemic-change litigation, direct legal services, and technical assistance to movement leaders and community-based partners.

Fellows will gain legal experience through their work on cases across all areas of our work and by being fully integrated into MA’s legal teams.&nbsp; The fellow will receive ongoing support and mentorship from MA’s staff attorneys and will be supervised by the legal director.&nbsp;&nbsp;&nbsp;

Roles and Responsibilities include but are not limited to:

<li>Support litigation and advocacy work, including but not limited to: conducting legal research; helping to develop and draft pleadings, motions, briefs, and other advocacy materials as appropriate, including Know Your Rights (KYR) guidance</li>

<li>Participate in ongoing advocacy coalitions</li>

Incoming fellows should have the following:

We are seeking someone who will be a trusted advisor, demonstrating expertise, creativity, diligence, and responsiveness in all legal matters.&nbsp;
Key Responsibilities:&nbsp;

Contract Management: Draft, review, and negotiate a variety of commercial agreements, including PPAs, ISDAs, EEIs, NDAs, ISO contracts, futures, broker agreements, renewable energy certificate agreements, carbon credit agreements, guarantees, letters of credit, and services contracts.&nbsp;&nbsp;

Regulatory Compliance: Ensure compliance with relevant energy regulations and standards. Provide legal advice on regulatory changes and their impact on the business.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Risk Management: Identify and mitigate legal risks associated with energy projects and operations. Develop and implement risk management strategies.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Stakeholder Engagement: Liaise with internal and external stakeholders, including regulatory bodies, industry associations, and business partners.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Legal Research: Conduct legal research on various issues related to energy law and provide actionable insights to the business.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Administrative Support: Managing law firm engagements and billing, assorted filings and recordkeeping.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Ad Hoc: Other matters as the need arises.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
Qualifications 
<ul>
<li>
Education: Juris Doctor (JD) Admission to the bar in California or the ability to qualify to practice law in California.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Experience: 2+ years of transactional experience at an in-house legal department or law firm.&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Legal Expertise: In-depth knowledge of energy law, including derivative regulations, contracting, regulatory frameworks, compliance requirements, and industry standards.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Analytical Skills: Ability to analyze complex legal issues and provide clear, practical advice.&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Communication Skills: Excellent verbal and written communication skills, with the ability to convey legal concepts to non-legal stakeholders.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Negotiation Skills: Strong negotiation skills to effectively manage and resolve disputes and negotiate contracts.&nbsp;&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Attention to Detail: High level of accuracy and attention to detail in legal drafting and review.&nbsp;
</li>
</ul>
<ul>
<li>
Problem-Solving: Proactive approach to identifying and resolving legal issues.&nbsp;&nbsp;
