DC Special Police Officer

Job Description
These volunteer officers relieve regular line officers from performing auxiliary tasks and other functions that deplete the number of regular officers on the street.
The Auxiliary unit is used in a variety of functions ranging from crowd and traffic control to assisting regular officers search a crime scene for evidence. The unit is used also for disasters (i.e., to secure areas and direct traffic because of downed power lines, flood areas and many other disaster situations).
Training:
Ferndale Police Auxiliary members receive a great deal of training, both ongoing as well as formal training. Ongoing training is done locally at the department or around the station (if the auxiliary is practicing traffic direction). The Auxiliary Coordinator directs all training.
Formal training is conducted at Oakland Community College, Oakland Police Academy. The Auxiliary receives 120 hours of classroom and range time, covering 14 topics in the classroom. Topics include:

Other equipment includes flashlights, whistles, rain hat covers, radio holsters, pepper spray case and other incidentals. This equipment cost can exceed $1,500.

POSITION SUMMARY
 
A Police Officer assigned to Patrol operates under the direct supervision of the Patrol Commander and Patrol Sergeant. The Patrol Officer is sworn to enforce all laws and ordinances for which the Department is responsible; to protect the lives and property of all persons; and to maintain peace and order within the Village of Mundelein. When properly required to do so the Patrol Officer will provide any service that is necessary for the furtherance of the Department's mission and objectives.
 
The Patrol Officer will take the appropriate police actions, within the limits of legal authority, whenever and wherever required. The Patrol Officer will maintain professional decorum and will display a proper attitude in all dealings with citizens, superiors and other Department personnel. The Patrol Officer is expected to understand and comply with the orders, directives, policies and procedures, rules and regulations of the Mundelein Police Department.
 
GENERAL APPLICANT INFORMATION
 
Training
Once hired, candidates will be subject to a field training process to be determined.
 
Work Schedule
Normally, police officers work an average of eighty hours per two-week period, which amounts to 2,080 hours annually. Currently, the patrol division works 12-hour shifts, which are re-bid on an annual basis. 
 
Direct Deposit
All employees hired after January 1, 1997, must participate in Village’s direct deposit program.

All sworn police officers are eligible to apply for participation in the Mundelein Police Pension Fund. Within three (3) months after being appointed to the sworn position, the police officer must make written application to the Pension Board if they wish to participate.

1. As a participant of the Mundelein Police Pension Fund, you are eligible for one of the following, if you have previous service in an Article 3 Fund before January 1, 2011:
 
A. Voluntary Retirement- Police Department eligibility is age fifty (50) with twenty (20) years of service. Annual benefits equal to the product of final pay times the sum of 1) 50%; plus 2) 2.5% for each year of service in excess of 20 years, but less than 30 years. Maximum benefit is 75% of final pay after 30 years of service. 
 
B. Mandatory Retirement- Mandatory retirement age is 65. Employee will be vested in retirement plan with a minimum of eight (8) years of service.
 
C. Final Pay- Final pay is defined as the salary attached to the rank held upon separation from active service.
 
2. If you do not have previous Article 3 service (before 1/1/11) the following pension provisions apply:
 
A. Voluntary Retirement:
 
* Minimum Retirement Age 55 with a minimum of 10 years of service.
* Early Retirement Option at age 50 with a minimum of 10 years of service, but a reduction in annuity of 1/2 of 1% for each month under age 55 (6% per year). 
* “Final Average Salary” (used to determine pension annuity) is based on an average salary based on the best 8 out of the last 10 years of service.
* Final Average Salary is capped at $130,166.37, increased annually by the lesser of 3% (of the salary amount) or 1/2 of the annual increase in the CPI-U. [2] 
* Survivor benefits reduced to 66 2/3% of deceased employee’s salary at time of death (subject to cost-of-living adjustments). 
* Cost of living adjustments beginning the year after the retiree or survivor turns age 60 with annual increases of the lesser of 3% or ½ of the annual increase in the CPI-U.
* Retirement pension calculated by multiplying 2.5% for each year of service by the “Final Average Salary,” capped at 75%.

Uniforms
The Village will issue uniforms to personnel assigned to the Police Department who are required to wear them. If an officer separates from the Police Department and does not complete his/her initial three-year period, the individual will be required to reimburse the Village for the cost of uniforms. PHYSICAL/MENTAL DEMANDS

*Non-Certified candidate testing will be held 1.5.2026 at 8:00 am - APD building located at 100 11th Ave Southwest, Alabaster 35007 to include a Written Test (all candidates regardless of education background) takes a basic written test and must make a 70 or higher to progress to the Physical Agility Test on the same day.&nbsp; Closed toed shoes required.
* APOST adopted the Basic Abilities Test (Work Keys Assessment) for all candidates that&nbsp;do not hold an associate degree or higher .
-Non-Certified candidates that do not hold an associate degree or higher degree, must register at:&nbsp; Jeffstate.edu to sit for the work keys assessment prior to an offer of a position.&nbsp;
