What is the purpose of this role?
The Certified Nurse Midwife (CNM) will bring compassionate, in-home prenatal care to women and families who often face the greatest barriers to accessing healthcare. As one of the first midwives in Nest’s new prenatal program, this role is an opportunity to provide hands-on care and build trusting relationships with moms through pregnancy, while also shaping how Nest delivers this vital service in the future. The CNM will walk alongside families up to 36 weeks of pregnancy, then help ensure a smooth transition to delivery and back into Nest’s family-centered care after birth.
What is the role?
The Certified Nurse Midwife will spend most of their time in the field delivering in-home prenatal visits, monitoring maternal and fetal health, providing patient education, and ensuring smooth transitions of care. They will work closely with Nest’s interdisciplinary team to integrate prenatal care with other primary, behavioral, and social services. While their primary focus is direct care, the CNM will also provide practical feedback as an early adopter of this program, helping ensure the model best meets the needs of patients and families.

Job Summary:
The Nurse Midwife is a licensed, independent practitioner who provides gynecological and obstetrical care to patients including preconception, antepartum, postpartum, contraception, and gynecologic care. When indicated, consults and collaborates with OBGYN physician, CMO, other providers and other health care staff to provide medical care, treatment, and counseling to patients. Participates in initial examination of obstetrical patient and is assigned responsibility for care and treatment of patient. Examines patient during pregnancy, utilizing physical findings, laboratory test results, and patient's statements to evaluate condition and ensure that patient's progress is normal. Discusses cases with Obstetrician to assure observation of specified practices. Instructs patient in diet and prenatal health practices. When deviations from standard are encountered during pregnancy, administers stipulated emergency measures, and arranges for immediate contact of Obstetrician. Conducts classes for groups of patients and families to provide information concerning pregnancy, childbirth, and family orientation. Performs postpartum examinations and treatments to ensure that patient is responding normally. Performs family planning counseling and preconception services including placement of IUDs and other implants, patches, oral, and injectable contraceptive methods.
 
Essential Job Responsibilities:

<li>Obtains and documents health history and assess the impact on the patient’s pregnancy and delivery.</li>
<li>Provides patient care based on practice guidelines standards of care and federal/state laws and regulations.</li>
<li>Performs pap smears</li>
<li>Arranges for laboratory testing during pregnancy</li>
<li>Advises patient on diet, exercise, and the effects of the environment and certain behaviors on the unborn child</li>
<li>Educates patients about the birth process. Educates patients and families about pregnancy, health status and maintaining a healthful pregnancy.</li>
<li>Monitors for complications during pregnancy and problem solve as needed to ensure the safety of both the mother and child</li>
<li>Consults with Obstetrician and other health providers, and community resources to prevent/resolve problems or concerns. Refers high risk cases. </li>
<li>Documents patient assessment, pregnancy progress and intervention and testing data using established EMR and documentation practices.</li>
<li>Keeps accurate health records and complete reports as required by law.</li>
<li>Participates in multidisciplinary teams to improve patient care processes and outcomes. Tracks quality assurance data and monitors prenatal and routine care management.</li>

Requirements:
Education and/or Experience:
BSN with advanced practice skills as a Nurse Midwife. 
Candidate must be a licensed Certified Nurse Midwife
Three years' experience as a midwife in a private practice, hospital or health center setting.
Language Skills:
Bilingual skills preferred (English/Spanish)

Equipment Operated:
Wide range of standard medical equipment including portable Ultrasound equipment, syringes, speculum, oxygen tanks, wheelchairs, thermometers, etc. Computer use and proficiency required.
 
Work Environment:
Medical exam/treatment rooms and medical offices in Health Center. Controlled lighting, air quality, and temperature settings. Environmental hazards may be unpredictable including exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.
 
Mental/Physical Requirements:
Involves standing, walking, kneeling, bending, grasping, manipulating and squatting and lifting (up to 50 lbs.). Walking or standing may be more than four (4) hours per day. Must be able to work in a standard medical office setting including use of a computer, and standard office equipment. Must have ability to read computer screens, printed materials and hearing and speech to communicate in person as well as over the phone. Must be able to attend meetings or make presentations at various sites when required. Stress can be triggered by an individual’s response to workload or specific cases.
