Who We Are Seeking: Our Tribal Police Department has multiple Inter-Tribal Governmental agreements with several Tribes in the State of Alaska and is looking to fill up to six (6) TPO positions. We are seeking motivated professionals, preferably with Peace Officer Standards and Training (POST), Alaska Police Standards Council Academy training, and at least one year of patrol experience; preferably in rural Alaskan communities, and/or a background in military policing. As a TPO, you will be part of a team dedicated to enforcing Tribal and federal laws. TPOs respond to a range of service calls; assisting elders, vulnerable individuals, and investigating crimes. They are primarily responsible for preventing crime and actively participating in community safety and crime prevention programs, upholding Tribal and federal laws, and protecting the public through patrolling assigned areas and completing tasks as assigned by their supervisor.
Additional Responsibilities: Follow standard operating procedures to observe and respond to various situations and/or emergencies; complete case work and produce internal reports; foster public relationships and correspond with emergency services, community groups and individuals; attend and provide evidence in court upon request; and participate in Tribal meetings, trainings, and events.

Compensation and Employee Benefits

<li>Public Employees Retirement System: The City provides the PERS retirement program at the following formulas: 2.7%@57 for new members and 3%@55 for classic members. The City does not participate in Social Security. </li>

Job Description
DEFINITION
Positions in this class are normally filled by advancement from the lower level of Police Officer II. A Police Officer III works under general supervision and within the framework and established policies and procedures of the Lakeport Police Department. 
CLASS CHARACTERISTICS
A Police Officer III has demonstrated by his/her performance, that he/she is capable of performing a variety of law enforcement duties with only occasional instruction or assistance. A police Officer III possesses strong knowledge of -police procedures and policies, and works productively in the absence of supervision. Work is normally reviewed only upon completion and for overall result. A position of this class has the required knowledge to perform basic supervisory tasks and to provide training for less experienced law enforcement employees.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
The following duties are typical for this classification. Incumbents may not perform all of the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices. 
Patrol and Traffic Safety
Patrols an assigned area during an assigned shift and looks for indicators of possible criminal activity or threats to life and property; answers calls for police services; enforces City, county, and state laws; makes field contacts and completes forms; may conduct both preliminary and follow-up investigations of disturbances, prowlers, burglaries, thefts, robberies, vehicle accidents, suspected homicides, and other criminal incidents. 
As a Motor Officer, patrols the City on a motorcycle or in a radar-equipped patrol unit; responds to calls related to traffic incidents and any other emergencies; observes, monitors, and controls routine and unusual traffic conditions; assists and advises motorists and enforces traffic safety laws.

Investigations
Coordinates and conducts complete and detailed investigations of crimes involving juveniles and adults, crimes against persons and property, and crimes involving vice, gaming and narcotics violations. 
Participates in all normal enforcement activities including enforcing local and State laws, issuing citations, making arrests, administering first aid, and transporting prisoners. 
Performs undercover and surveillance activities; interviews victims, complainants, witnesses and suspects; collects, preserves, and maintains evidence and property related to suspected crimes; serves warrants and subpoenas.
Prepares investigative reports and case information; files criminal cases with the District Attorneys Office and works with the District Attorney on case filings; provides testimony and evidence in court. 
Answers questions from the public concerning local and State laws, procedures, and activities of the Department; develops and maintains good relationships with the public, including informants and contacts which may be helpful in criminal investigations. 
Other Functions
As assigned, acts as training officer for new Police Officers; serves as field supervisor on individual calls requiring special attention; or conducts background investigations. 
As assigned, makes presentations before a variety of public groups to promote crime prevention activities and to enhance public understanding of Police Department activities; serves as liaison to neighborhood watch groups and schools. 
When assigned as a Canine Officer, cares for, maintains and trains a police dog; conducts demonstrations and raises funds to maintain program.
As assigned, serves as the School Resources Officer; teaches a variety of drug resistance classes; assists with student discipline and counseling; ensures that school district policies and school rules are followed; maintains statistical data on assigned programs; fosters a positive relationship between law enforcement, students and school staff.
May be assigned to direct, supervise and coordinate police officers when a supervisor is not available; assists in briefing and training new personnel; may be assigned to direct, train and coordinate police cadets, police explorers and/or volunteers.
QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES
 
Education and/or Experience 
Must satisfactorily perform the qualification of Police Officer I and Police Officer II. In addition, this position requires a minimum of seven (7) years of law enforcement experience as a Police Officer with the Lakeport Police Department or equivalent; possession of or have met eligibility requirements for Intermediate Peace Officer Standards and Training Certificate at the time of hire, possession of or have met eligibility for Advanced Peace Officer Standards and Training Certificate within two years of appointment, have a satisfactory performance evaluation and letter of recommendation from his/her supervisor for internal candidates.
Knowledge, Skills and Abilities 
Skills of Police Officer I and Police Officer II positions with a combined knowledge and expertise in criminal investigation, evidence collection and training. Also provides supervisory support when a supervisor is not available.
Special Requirements
Possession of a Class C California drivers license and a satisfactory driving record.
Meet requirements or standards mandated by the California Government Code for a Peace Officer.

FIELD TRAINING PROGRAM

<li> Police Officers are assigned to the Field Training Program prior to assuming full responsibility in a solo officer assignment. Experienced Field Training Officers serve as trainers, coaches, and role models to guide officers through the learning experience. Field Training Officers provide daily coaching, guidance, and counseling.</li>
<li> The primary objectives of the Field Training Program are to develop and enhance an officers learning from the Academy within the community environment through real-life activities, and to provide consistent evaluations of skills, knowledge, application, and ability to problem-solve effectively. Officers will learn to perform normal police activities, respond to calls for service, and analyze complex problems.</li>
<li> The Field Training Program is 17 consecutive weeks. This includes 2 weeks of department orientation and training, 1 week of field orientation, 14 weeks of training and evaluation, which includes 1 week of solo officer assessment. The training program includes training in:</li>

Compensation and Employee Benefits
<ul>
<li>Public Employees Retirement System: The City provides the PERS retirement program at the following formulas: 2.7%@57 for new members and 3%@55 for classic members. The City does not participate in Social Security. </li>
<li>Holidays: Thirteen holidays paid during the pay period when the holiday occurs.</li>
<li>Vacation: Vacation time starts at 80 hours annually increasing to 200 hours based on time in service.</li>
<li>Sick Leave: Sick leave accrual of 12 days per year.</li>
