Academy Training
Our Academy usually runs from 8am-4pm, Monday-Friday. The Academy is not residentially based; at the end of the workday, recruits go to their own homes - not a barracks or dormitory. The tone of our Academy endeavors to treat all of our recruits as continuing adult learners. Those ultimately hired will receive extensive training in such areas as law, crisis intervention, firearms, and use of community resources. This initial training lasts six months, and is one of the most comprehensive in the country. It is conducted in Madison under the direct supervision of the Madison Police Department Training Staff.
It is not unusual for our newly-hired officers to have widely varying technical and non-technical skills. Our goal is to provide a base of training which builds on each individual's unique body of knowledge and expertise. As a recruit in training,&nbsp;full salary and benefits&nbsp;apply.
Field Training

Serves as the department’s Accreditation Manager.

Additional Information for Law Enforcement Retirees
Cayuga Nation is a Sovereign Native American Nation enjoying a government-to-government relationship with the United States, as guaranteed by treaty. Accordingly, there is little or no impact upon an experienced applicant’s current pension or benefits received through previous public sector employment.
Most notably, there is no need for a ‘pension waiver’ from New York State for retired municipal law enforcement officers.

REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS

Must be a current or formerly certified federal, state, local, tribal or territorial police officer, special agent or criminal investigator, who can prove:
<ul>

Successful completion of a recognized law enforcement training academy or equivalent
</li>
<li>
Current or separated honorable duty status.
</li>
<li>
Please note: no candidate that has been decertified as a law enforcement officer by any government or municipality will be considered for employment.

Undergraduate or Graduate degree.
</li>
<li>
Fifteen years of previous sworn law enforcement experience, including at least ten years prior experience in a supervisory capacity or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the position.

Completion of advanced coursework in Police Supervision.
</li>
<li>
Experience as a lead investigator or detective.
</li>

Successful completion of a psychological examination.

Must be physician-certified as fit for full and strenuous law enforcement duty.

Qualifications
EDUCATION AND EXPERIENCE: • High school diploma or equivalent and a minimum of 30 semester hours of college in a related field at an accredited college/university or verifiable military service with honorable discharge.

NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES: • Knowledge of basic math to calculate speeding violations, elapsed time and accident reconstruction. • Knowledge of local, state and federal criminal laws; laws relevant to police conduct; human behavior and motivation; techniques of self-defense; current police methods and practices. • Knowledge of basic computers. • Ability to read and understand reports, memos, manuals, policies, rules, regulations, laws, ordinances and statutes. • Ability to write accurate, thorough and complete reports. • Ability to develop and maintain good working relationships with citizens and other officers. • Ability to use reasoning to make timely, accurate decisions in a variety of circumstances. • Ability to exert force as needed to intervene in conflict situations or subdue suspects. • Ability to be available for call back after hours and provide necessary personal contact phone numbers. This will require allowing personal contact numbers to be listed with a third party notification system.
