Job Description

Essential Functions
• Provides general courtroom security and coordinates the transfer of inmates from local holding facility to required court appearances; participates in court activities; responds to court subpoenas; assists in preparing case files and evidence for court presentation; testifies and presents evidence during court. • Patrols designated areas of the City in car, by foot, or other means to preserve law and order, discover and prevent the commission of crimes, and enforce traffic and other laws and ordinances; maintain awareness of and remain alert for wanted suspects, known criminals, stolen vehicles, missing persons, traffic violators, and crimes in progress; issues warnings and citations. • Responds to calls for the protection of life and property, the enforcement of laws and ordinances, general public service calls, and complaints including those involving automobile accidents, traffic hazards, misdemeanor and felony incidents, domestic disturbances, property control, civil complaints, animal control, and related incidents; responds to and provide assistance at a variety of public service type calls that are non-criminal in nature. • Conduct preliminary investigations at scenes of incidents to which summoned or incidents observed; determines what, if an crime has been committed; identifies, collects, preserves, processes, photographs, and books evidence, locates and interviews victims and witnesses; identifies and interrogates suspects. • Prepares and serves search and arrest warrants; apprehends and arrests offenders for crimes committed under Federal, State, and local laws and codes; controls and effectively process individuals under the influences of drugs or alcohol or other potentially hostile situations. • Patrols assigned areas; performs a full range of traffic enforcement duties; observes, monitors, and controls routine and unusual traffic conditions, assists and advises motorists; use radar to detect speed; issues citations and warnings; investigates traffic accidents; coordinates traffic patterns during special events; conducts special enforcement details including DUI; seatbelt; and child safety seat checkpoints. • Directs traffic at fires, special events, and other emergency situations; provides traffic and crowd control at parades, festivals, riots, and other events. • Provides assistance or backup support to other officer, emergency medical providers, fire department personnel, state, federal, and local law enforcement agencies, other public service agencies, provides emergency response on a twenty-four hour basis needed. • Processes required paperwork during scheduled tour of duty. Requests and process status reports for driver’s licenses and histories, criminal histories, and other information through NCIC and GCIC database. • Serves as liaison an public relations officer for the assigned area; established and preserve good relationship with the public; may develop reliable informants and provide intelligence information to divisional and/or departmental personnel; attends community meetings and neighborhood associations on a regular and ad-hoc basis. • Contacts and cooperates with other law enforcement agencies in matters relating to the apprehension of offenders and the investigation of offenses; may respond to requests for assistance from agencies outside City for mutual aid in the suppression of civil disturbances, apprehension of criminals or other related requests. • Participates in continuous training to enhance law enforcement skills including defensive driving skills, apprehensions and arrest techniques, investigated skills, and general law enforcement skills. • Performs a variety of administrative and other types of duties in support of law enforcement services, programs, and activities; attend meting; prepares and submit new releases; maintain and calibrate specialized equipment. • Prepares a variety of reports including those on activities, operations, arrests made, unusual incidents observed; prepares investigative report and case information. • Testifies in juvenile, civil, traffic, municipal and criminal courts, and parole and MVR hearings; prepares and presents evidence; responds to mandatory court calls during irregular hours. • Answers questions from the public concerning local and State laws, procedures, and activities of department. • Receives, searches, books, fingerprints, and transports prisoners.

Work Schedule
Normally, police officers work an average of eighty hours per two-week period, which amounts to 2,080 hours annually. Currently, the patrol division works 12-hour shifts, which are re-bid on an annual basis.

All employees hired after January 1, 1997, must participate in Village’s direct deposit program.

B. Mandatory Retirement- Mandatory retirement age is 65. Employee will be vested in retirement plan with a minimum of eight (8) years of service.
 
C. Final Pay- Final pay is defined as the salary attached to the rank held upon separation from active service.
 
2. If you do not have previous Article 3 service (before 1/1/11) the following pension provisions apply:
 
A. Voluntary Retirement:
 
* Minimum Retirement Age 55 with a minimum of 10 years of service.
* Early Retirement Option at age 50 with a minimum of 10 years of service, but a reduction in annuity of 1/2 of 1% for each month under age 55 (6% per year). 
* “Final Average Salary” (used to determine pension annuity) is based on an average salary based on the best 8 out of the last 10 years of service.
* Final Average Salary is capped at $130,166.37, increased annually by the lesser of 3% (of the salary amount) or 1/2 of the annual increase in the CPI-U. [2] 
* Survivor benefits reduced to 66 2/3% of deceased employee’s salary at time of death (subject to cost-of-living adjustments). 
* Cost of living adjustments beginning the year after the retiree or survivor turns age 60 with annual increases of the lesser of 3% or ½ of the annual increase in the CPI-U.
* Retirement pension calculated by multiplying 2.5% for each year of service by the “Final Average Salary,” capped at 75%.

Uniforms
The Village will issue uniforms to personnel assigned to the Police Department who are required to wear them. If an officer separates from the Police Department and does not complete his/her initial three-year period, the individual will be required to reimburse the Village for the cost of uniforms. PHYSICAL DEMANDS &amp; WORK ENVIRONMENT Work hours will vary depending on assignments, client schedules, project deadlines, and the needs of the company. Workweeks may exceed 40 hours and may involve any of the 7 days of the week, depending on the needs of the business. The work environment may be fast-paced and stressful or may also be quiet and slow-paced. All environments and pace of work will require alertness and ability to perform under pressure.
While performing the duties of this job, the employee must be able to sit, stand, and walk for variable amounts of time throughout an assigned shift; use hands to finger, handle or feel objects, tools or controls; reach with hands and arms; climb stairs; occasionally stoop, kneel, or crouch. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move objects 25 pounds or more. Specific vision abilities required by the job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. Frequently engages in mental concentration, analysis, and formulation.
