POSITION SUMMARY
The Shingle Springs Tribal Police Department is committed to providing the highest levels of customer service to its residents and visitors, while constantly improving the quality of life that the tribal community desires and deserves. The Departments police officers enforce both tribal ordinances and applicable federal laws on the reservation, and work closely with other law enforcement agencies to maintain a safe environment on the Shingle Springs Rancheria. The Police Department enjoys a positive relationship with its tribal community and takes every opportunity to interact and engage residents and visitors on a regular basis. In addition to sworn Tribal Police Officers, the department employs non-sworn Public Safety Officers to assist in many areas, such as crime prevention, community outreach and building security.
 
Sworn Tribal Police Officers enforce laws related to the protection of life and property of the Tribal members, Community members, and visitors of the Shingle Springs Rancheria. Police Officers direct and control traffic, prevent crime or disturbances of peace, and arrest violators by performing the duties outlined below. All Tribal Police Officers shall receive perishable skills and legal update in-service training as part of their regular duties.
 
SPECIFIC RESPONSIBILITIES

<li> Patrols the Shingle Springs Rancheria Community, buildings and acres owned by the Shingle Springs Band of Miwok Indians, to prevent and discover crimes, investigate crimes, maintain order, and answer calls and complaints. </li>
<li> Answers Community requests for police services and outreach opportunities on the Rancheria. </li>
<li> Familiarizes self with routes, roads and community living on the Reservation. </li>
<li> Organizes and coordinates search and rescue efforts, if necessary. </li>

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

DRUG SCREEN
Shingle Springs Rancheria requires the successful completion of a drug screening of all potential Tribal employees prior to being hired. The Tribe recognizes that the State of California has legalized the use of marijuana. The Tribe is located on federally owned trust land and complies with federal laws. Therefore, marijuana use is prohibited, and all drug tests will include a screening for THC.
Shingle Springs Rancheria recognizes a zero-tolerance drug and alcohol policy and employees will be required to sign a Consent to Drug and/or Alcohol Testing. Employees may be selected for alcohol / drug testing upon reasonable suspicion, and upon any/all accidents.

Incumbents are committed to the protection of life and property, apprehension of criminals, enforcement of laws and ordinances and preservation of the peace. Work is performed in assigned shifts, from patrol cars or on foot. Assignments may vary between uniform patrol, preliminary investigation, and traffic enforcement. Officers rotate shifts and may work either day or night. The work involves an element of danger and may at times require the use of physical strength and agility to apprehend and physically subdue persons suspected of committing crimes.  NOTE: Applicants from states other than Washington must have the ability to obtain Basic or Equivalency Law Enforcement certification by the Washington State Criminal Justice Training Commission, within the probationary period.

ACCEPTABLE QUALIFICATIONS
In addition to each item listed above, the applicant must be a minimum of 21 years of age and no older than 45 years of age. The applicant must possess a high school diploma or GED.
The applicant must pass the Muskogee Police Department's written examination and physical agility examination and be able to pass the Oklahoma Police Pension and Retirement System's medical standards, pass all psychological examinations required by the Department and successfully complete state certification.
Internal candidates must receive at least an "average" on each rating on the internal evaluation form. If the internal candidate received a written reprimand their application will not be considered for six (6) months. If the internal candidate received a suspension or demotion their application will not be considered for twelve (12) months.
EXAMPLES OF DUTIES
 A Police Officer patrols the city in a police vehicle in order to enforce laws, prevent crime and preserve order; protect and rescue the public from criminal activity, hazards of traffic and dangers of natural phenomena; directs the flow of traffic, enforces traffic laws and regulations, investigates traffic accidents; accepts assignments in the patrol, investigative and services divisions as necessary; serves as a member of the Special Operations Team or Negotiations Team, K-9 Team, Mounted Patrol, undercover unit, investigative unit as assigned; works in uniform or plain clothes as designated; writes reports, makes arrests, transports prisoners and conducts investigations into criminal activity; utilizes a variety of Department forms and documents; serves warrants; testifies in court; may be responsible for training of new Police Officers and preparing evaluation reports; performs related duties as required. Assignments may include work on special tasks, which call upon specialized abilities and knowledge possessed by the Officer. Work assignments can be general or specific and instructions are received from a supervisor who reviews work methods and results through reports, personal inspection and discussion.

The Portage Department of Public Safety (PDPS) Lateral Entry Program affords certified, experienced Part-Time Police Officers the opportunity to join the Portage Department of Public Safety – Police Division. Opportunities for Part-Time Officers who have excelled in their law enforcement careers and are up to the task of meeting the high standards of the PDPS are HERE!
Current Part-Time Police Officers with experience will be hired at an advanced pay step based on prior years of experience, up to Step F. Step F of the current Portage Police Officer’s Association collective bargaining agreement is $40.62 per hour. Step A for entry-level officers is $27.50 per hour. 
Part-time Police Officers work a schedule of 20-28 hours per week. The part-time position does offer some benefits including sick time, vacation time, and holiday pay. 
All candidates must be certifiable officers. This position has a residency requirement of 30 miles from the Portage city limits. Officers outside the limits would need to relocate within the first year after completing probation. 
Out-of-state officers or those separated from a police department for more than a year, are subject to re-licensure requirements defined by MCOLES and the Recognition of Prior Training &amp; Education program. Successful out-of-state candidates must also obtain a valid Michigan driver's license upon hire. Successful candidates must complete all required tests and evaluations.
