POSITION SUMMARY:
Under the general supervision of the Chief of Police, and assigned under direct supervision of Sergeants, and the Lieutenant, the Police Officer is responsible for all general uniform police operations which may place the employees life or personal safety at risk. <li> Controls traffic and enforces traffic laws and ordinances: directs traffic, assists motorists, issues citations and warnings for moving violations, D.U.I.s and investigates accidents involving motor vehicles, prepares and submits accident, offense, arrests, and other forms and reports as necessary.</li>
<li> Serves processes, notices, summons and subpoenas and keeps records of dispositions; escorts prisoners to and from county jail or from one location to another, and subdues unruly prisoners when necessary.</li>

WORKING CONDITIONS AND PHYSICAL DEMANDS:
Must be able to pass annual Police department physical fitness test. Functions of the position generally performed in a controlled environment, but subject to all seasonal and weather extremes, and travel conditions, i.e., travel throughout the city and to other locations. Many functions of the work pose high degree of hazard uncertainty. Physical readiness is essential to effective job performance and must maintain physical condition to perform essential duties as specified by P.O.S.T. certification. (Physical mobility to negotiate around crime scenes and/or emergency situations.) Various levels of mental application required, i.e., memory for details, emotional stability, discriminating thinking, creative problem solving. Unique mental stresses associated with law enforcement demands may be present. Seasonal Special Police Officer

Job Description
These volunteer officers relieve regular line officers from performing auxiliary tasks and other functions that deplete the number of regular officers on the street.
The Auxiliary unit is used in a variety of functions ranging from crowd and traffic control to assisting regular officers search a crime scene for evidence. The unit is used also for disasters (i.e., to secure areas and direct traffic because of downed power lines, flood areas and many other disaster situations).
Training:
Ferndale Police Auxiliary members receive a great deal of training, both ongoing as well as formal training. Ongoing training is done locally at the department or around the station (if the auxiliary is practicing traffic direction). The Auxiliary Coordinator directs all training.
Formal training is conducted at Oakland Community College, Oakland Police Academy. The Auxiliary receives 120 hours of classroom and range time, covering 14 topics in the classroom. Topics include:

Other equipment includes flashlights, whistles, rain hat covers, radio holsters, pepper spray case and other incidentals. This equipment cost can exceed $1,500.
The Auxiliary unit is a group of dedicated volunteers striving for the betterment and safety of the City of Ferndale and its residents.

As assigned, makes presentations before a variety of public groups to promote crime prevention activities and to enhance public understanding of Police Department activities; serves as liaison to neighborhood watch groups and schools. When assigned as a Canine Officer, cares for, maintains and trains a police dog; conducts demonstrations and raises funds to maintain program. As assigned, serves as the School Resources Officer; teaches a variety of drug resistance classes; assists with student discipline and counseling; ensures that school district policies and school rules are followed; maintains statistical data on assigned programs; fosters a positive relationship between law enforcement, students and school staff. May be assigned to direct, supervise and coordinate police officers when a supervisor is not available; assists in briefing and training new personnel; may be assigned to direct, train and coordinate police cadets, police explorers and/or volunteers. QUALIFICATIONS GUIDELINES Education and/or Experience Any combination of education and/or experience that has provided the knowledge, skills, and abilities necessary for satisfactory job performance. Example combinations include graduation from high school or equivalent and successful completion of a POST certified basic academy. One year of current full-time experience as a police officer in a California public agency is highly desirable. Special Requirements Possession of a Class C California driver's license and a satisfactory driving record. Possession of a P.O.S.T Basic Certificate, within two years of appointment. Receive satisfactory results from a background investigation, physical and psychological examination, drug screening and administrative screening which meet the established qualification standards.
