Purpose: Responsible for evaluating and treating children and adults with ocular motility disorders. Working in a clinical setting to access patients with the use of retinoscopy, ocular motility and bi-nocular vision including but not limited to amblyopic, convergence insufficiency and accommodative esotropia. Familiar with sensorimotor evaluation and measurement for pre and post surgical strabismus and other complaints relating to other binocular function. The Certified Orthoptist performs a broad range of duties related to the delivery of care to adult and pediatric patients seen within the Department of Ophthalmology. Patient care includes visual acuity testing, ocular motility testing, patient medical history and instruction to patients and guardians. The Certified Orthoptist must also instruct Ophthalmology residents, fellows and Ophthalmic Medical Technicians with regard to patient testing, data, testing techniques and theory. The Certified Orthoptist must determine testing methods most suitable for a particular patient. Data derived from these procedures are presented to the staffing Ophthalmologist/Optometrist to determine diagnosis and treatment plans for the patient. The Certified Orthoptist is expected to participate as a member of the Ophthalmology staff with various tasks as assigned. Responsibilities:

Key Responsibilities:

Assist oral surgeon during surgical procedures, including preparing the operating room, sterilizing instruments, and ensuring a clean and organized environment.

Take and develop radiographs (X-rays) as needed.
</li>
<li>
Provide pre-operative and post-operative care instructions to patients.
</li>
<li>
Monitor patient vitals and comfort during procedures.
</li>
<li>
Ensure all surgical tools and equipment are sterilized and prepared according to safety and infection control protocols.
</li>
<li>
Exceptional infection control understanding and practices.
</li>
<li>
Maintain accurate patient records and update charts with surgical details, medications, and care instructions.
</li>
<li>
Assist in patient intake, including gathering medical histories and reviewing treatment plans.
</li>
<li>
Coordinate with office staff to schedule appointments, surgeries, and follow-up visits.
</li>
<li>
Educate patients on post-operative care and answer any questions regarding recovery.
</li>
<li>
Maintain organization of stock/inventory and coordinate ordering processes when necessary, cross referencing with distributors to find best pricing options for different surgical tools/equipment/stock items.
</li>
<li>
Implement systems and schedules for maintaining infection control. (Sterilization, line flushing, etc.)
</li>
<li>
Stay up-to-date on the latest dental and surgical practices.
</li>
</ul>
Qualifications:
<ul>
<li>
Previous experience as an oral surgery assistant or dental assistant, with experience in surgical environments.
</li>
<li>
Strong knowledge of oral surgery procedures, patient care, and dental radiography.
</li>
<li>
Ability to assist with oral surgery equipment and instruments.
</li>
<li>
Proficiency in using dental software and patient management systems.
</li>
<li>
Exceptional communication and interpersonal skills.
</li>
<li>
Ability to stay calm and provide support to patients during procedures.
</li>
<li>
Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.
</li>
</ul>
Preferred Skills:
<ul>
<li>
Certified Dental Assistant (CDA) or equivalent certification preferred.
</li>
<li>
Experience working in a fast-paced, high-volume dental practice.
</li>
<li>
Knowledge of sterilization techniques and infection control protocols.
</li>
<li>
CPR/BLS certification.
