Job Description
The Office Leader serves as the executive leader for the Roanoke, VA office, overseeing all aspects of operations, including staffing, business development, marketing, project oversight, and strategic planning. This role drives the growth of transportation, buildings and facilities, and water, environment, and energy services in Roanoke and surrounding areas, while building, inspiring, and supporting high-performing teams. The Office Leader ensures strong client relationships, high-quality technical delivery, and solid financial performance for the office.
Responsibilities
- Lead the Roanoke office as the executive leader for the local and surrounding markets, setting direction and ensuring alignment with the organization’s strategic plan.
- Collaborate with regional and corporate leadership to develop, refine, and implement strategic initiatives that support growth in transportation, buildings and facilities, and water, environment, and energy business lines.
- Build, inspire, and support high-performing teams by fostering a culture of collaboration, accountability, and continuous improvement.
- Maintain and strengthen existing client relationships while proactively developing new clients, particularly with transportation authorities, municipalities, public works departments, and government agencies in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas.
- Ensure client satisfaction with services by maintaining regular communication, addressing concerns promptly, and aligning deliverables with client expectations.
- Oversee marketing and business development activities, including the preparation and review of proposals, management of procurement schedules, and coordination with marketing staff.
- Manage contracts and provide oversight to Project Managers to ensure projects meet scope, schedule, budget, and quality expectations.
- Monitor and manage project financials, including project performance, budgets, and invoicing, to support strong financial outcomes.
- Forecast administrative staffing and facility needs for the office to support current and future workload.
- Review design and production work completed by staff to ensure it meets the highest professional standards and complies with company standards, including ISO:9001-2015 requirements.
- Supervise the production of construction documents, studies, and reports, ensuring technical accuracy and regulatory compliance.
- Seal and sign construction documents as appropriate, in accordance with professional licensure requirements.
- Take overall responsibility for the profitability and financial performance of the Roanoke office, including revenue growth and cost management.
- Coordinate staff resource assignments with regional offices to support work-share, optimize utilization, and enhance project delivery.
- Collaborate with regional and corporate managers to support cross-office business development and shared project opportunities.
- Carry out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with organizational policies and applicable laws, ensuring fair and consistent practices.
- Interview, hire, and onboard new team members, ensuring the office is staffed with skilled and engaged professionals.
- Assign and direct work to staff, providing clear expectations and guidance to support successful project execution.
- Conduct performance appraisals, provide regular feedback, and manage performance to support employee growth and accountability.
- Reward and recognize strong performance and address performance issues, complaints, and workplace concerns in a timely and constructive manner.
- Lead and manage team members through ongoing coaching, one-on-one meetings, and goal setting to support professional development and mentorship.
- Champion a culture of mentorship by guiding emerging leaders, supporting staff career progression, and promoting knowledge sharing across the office.
Essential Skills
- Bachelor’s degree in engineering.
- Registered Professional Engineer (PE) in the Commonwealth of Virginia.
- 20+ years of industry experience in engineering, including supervisory responsibilities, project management, and business development.
- Demonstrated experience in transportation and roadway design and construction.
- Proven experience in engineering management with a focus on leading multidisciplinary teams.
- Established relationships with the Virginia Department of Transportation (VDOT) and/or municipal and regional transportation authorities.
- Experience managing an office and leading teams in a professional services or engineering environment.
- Strong background in business development, including client relationship management and proposal development.
- Experience mentoring staff and supporting professional growth and development.
- Ability to manage project financials, including budgets, performance tracking, and invoicing.
- Capability to review and approve construction documents, studies, and reports in accordance with professional standards and ISO:9001-2015 requirements.
- Strong leadership, communication, and interpersonal skills, with the ability to inspire and guide diverse teams.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- Master’s degree in engineering is preferred.
- Experience working with municipalities, public works departments, and government agencies in the Roanoke Valley and surrounding areas.
- Demonstrated success in developing and executing strategic plans for office or regional growth.
- Experience coordinating staff resources across multiple offices or regions.
- Familiarity with ISO:9001-2015 quality management standards and their application in engineering practice.
- Proven ability to handle employee relations matters, including performance management, coaching, and conflict resolution.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, with the ability to balance strategic leadership, client engagement, and operational oversight.
Work Environment
This role operates in a hybrid work environment, with an expectation of working primarily in person and typically three days in the office and two days working from home. The position is based in a general office setting where work is primarily sedentary, involving extensive use of computers and standard office equipment, with occasional standing and walking. The office environment provides adequate lighting and temperature control, with no significant exposure to hazardous or unpleasant conditions such as excessive noise or dust. The culture emphasizes collaboration, mentorship, and professional growth, offering opportunities to lead impactful projects, develop strong client relationships, and shape the strategic direction of the office.

This is a Permanent position based out of Roanoke, VA.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $210000.00 - $260000.00/yr.
