Issue One is a nonpartisan, nonprofit advocacy organization that unites Republicans, Democrats, and independents to win game-changing federal reforms to fix our broken political system and create an inclusive democracy that works for everyone. Issue One educates the public and Congress to pass legislation to increase transparency, strengthen government ethics and accountability, reduce the influence of big money in politics, protect the freedom to vote, and strengthen U.S. elections.
 
POSITION
The Citizen Engagement Fellowship is a six-month long, part-time fellowship designed for accomplished professionals in the global democracy and governance community who seek to bring their international experience to bear on strengthening democracy here in the United States. Created at a moment of significant transition in the international democracy spacewith an abundance of practitioners seeking domestic opportunitiesthe program provides a structured pathway for experienced leaders to pivot into the U.S. democracy reform ecosystem.
 
This six-month fellowship invites 23 seasoned democracy practitioners, each with at least 10 years of experience in international democratic development, civil society strengthening, election integrity, governance, or related fields. Fellows will dedicate up to 20 hours per month to independent and collaborative work with Issue One, serving as thought partners, strategic advisors, and contributors across the organizations programmatic and operational priorities.
 
Situated within Issue Ones network of bipartisan reform advocates, policy strategists, and democracy experts, the Democracy Fellows Program provides a collegial environment and an intellectually rich setting for cross-national learning, professional development, and democratic innovation. Fellows engage deeply with Issue Ones mission, contribute specialized expertise, and translate lessons learned abroad into insights that strengthen democratic practice in the American context. 
 
RESPONSIBILITIES

<li>Producing research, analysis, or strategic memos that frame U.S. democracy reform within a global comparative context.</li>
<li>Advising Issue One teams on best practices drawn from international democracy development</li>
<li>Supporting targeted projects, convenings, or initiatives related to elections, civic engagement, accountability, or public trust</li>
<li>Participating in knowledge-sharing sessions, internal briefings, or cross-team discussions</li>
<li>Developing a written or conceptual product that aligns with the fellows area of focus </li>
</ul>
 
REQUIREMENTS
<ul>
<li>Minimum of approximately 10 years of experience in the international democracy, governance, or civil society sector</li>
<li>Demonstrated expertise relevant to democracy strengthening.</li>
<li>Strong writing, analysis, and conceptual framing abilities</li>
<li>Ability to translate international experience for domestic audiences</li>
<li>Collaborative mindset with the ability to work independently</li>
<li>Strong judgment and an eagerness to contribute strategic insights</li>

LOCATION
Fellows will work remotely and may have periodic meetings in our Washington, DC office on Tuesdays and Wednesdays. If fully remote, they must reside in a state where Issue One is formally established. These states include California, Colorado, Louisiana, Maryland, Massachusetts, Missouri, North Carolina, Rhode Island, Utah, Pennsylvania, and Virginia. Remote opportunities outside of these states will not be available.
We anticipate this being a roughly 6 month fellowship, starting in January 2026. 
 
COMPENSATION
This fellow will be expected to work 40 hours per month and be compensated at $500 per month.

What You’ll Do
As a Lead Woodworking Counselor, you’ll guide campers ages 7–16 through developmentally appropriate woodworking experiences within a shared studio environment. You’ll differentiate instruction so younger campers build confidence with foundational skills while older campers take on more complex, multi-step projects. Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:

What You’ll Do
As a Lead Machine Sewing Counselor, you’ll help create a safe, inclusive, and engaging environment where kids thrive and build skills. Your responsibilities include:
<ul>
<li>Teaching campers a range of sewing projects &nbsp;from beginner-friendly items like pillows and tote bags to more advanced garments, patterns, and layered designs.</li>
<li>Adapting instruction to a wide age range (ages 9–16), ensuring that younger campers learn at a safe, steady pace while older campers are given opportunities for independence and creativity.</li>
<li>Guiding campers in reading and interpreting sewing patterns, measuring and cutting fabric, and troubleshooting machine issues.</li>
<li>Fostering creativity by encouraging campers to customize their projects with fabric choices, embellishments, and design ideas.</li>
<li>Reinforcing sewing safety and workshop etiquette, including machine setup, needle safety, and clean-up routines.</li>
<li>Supporting the Site Director in operating your designated program, such as: attendance reporting, supply management, and documenting incidents.</li>
<li>Executing lesson plans according to DEAN Adventure Camps' set curricula.</li>
<li>Fostering a welcoming space that celebrates diversity and inclusion.</li>
<li>Managing groups with enthusiasm, patience, and creativity.</li>

What Makes You a Great Fit
As a Lead Machine Sewing Counselor, you must be able to teach and display technical knowledge associated with the following subject:

<li>Machine Sewing&nbsp;
<ul>
<li>Proficiency in Machine Sewing – Skilled in using a variety of sewing machines (mechanical and electronic), threading, tension adjustment, and troubleshooting.</li>
<li>Fabric Knowledge – Understanding of different fabrics (woven, knit, specialty) and how they interact with machines.</li>
<li>Pattern Reading &amp; Interpretation – Ability to read, interpret, and teach sewing patterns; confident in guiding campers through pinning, cutting, and adjustments.</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Adaptable Teacher – Experienced in working with a broad age range (9–16), skilled at scaffolding instruction so younger campers feel supported while older campers are challenged.</li>
<li>Creative Mentor – Excels at blending technical instruction with creative freedom, encouraging campers to personalize and problem-solve.</li>
<li>Youth Experience – Comfortable managing groups of children and teens with patience, enthusiasm, and a strong focus on safety.</li>
<li>Problem-Solver – You think on your feet, helping counselors and campers overcome obstacles quickly and calmly.</li>
<li>Team Player – You excel at mentoring Assistant and Junior Counselors through strong leadership and communication. You are comfortable managing CITs.</li>

Schedule and Requirements
<ul>
<li>Full on-site availability during the summer: June–August, Monday–Friday
<ul>
<li>Hours: camp operates 7am–6pm, leads typically work 35 hours per week within this timeframe, generally 8am-4pm</li>
<li>Ability to commute to: 2500 Main St, Lawrenceville, NJ 08648</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Must be at least 21 years old.</li>
<li>Must be up to date on all immunizations and willing to provide emergency health information upon hire.</li>
<li>Ability to lift 50 lbs, respond quickly to emergencies, and work in an active, outdoor environment.</li>
<li>Must have valid First Aid &amp; CPR certification.</li>
</ul>
