The University of Rochester seeks an experienced, strategic, and collaborative leader to serve as its next Associate Vice President for Human Subject Protection (AVP-HSP).&nbsp; Reporting to the University’s Vice President for Research, the Associate Vice President is responsible for the staff, resources, systems, and policies that enable research involving human subjects, sustaining safety and compliance while advancing knowledge.
Key functions of the Office of Human Subject Projection (OHSP) under the AVP-HSP’s responsibility include <a href="https://www.rochester.edu/ohsp/rsrb/index.html" target="_blank">Research Subject Review Board</a> (RSRB), <a href="https://www.rochester.edu/ohsp/education/index.html" target="_blank">Research Education and Training</a>, and <a href="https://www.rochester.edu/ohsp/quality/index.html" target="_blank">Research Quality Improvement</a>. At any given time, there are more than 2,000 active research studies being conducted by approximately 3,000 investigators, across more than 100 departments, centers, and labs at the University and University of Rochester Medical Center. The AVP-HSP must be forward-thinking and proactive in considering the impact that evolving regulations and external factors may have on University-wide research plans, programs, and operations. They are the University leader in human subject-research risk-assessment and risk-mitigation discussions.
As OHSP is a University-wide resource, the AVP-HSP collaborates with research deans across the University as well as the Office of Research and Project Administration, the Office for Clinical Research, the Clinical and Translational Science Institute, and the Office of General Counsel. Alongside research deans from each school and key members of the Office of the Vice President for Research, the AVP-HSP is a member of the University’s Research Executive Committee. Rochester’s human-subject protection program has been AAHRPP-accredited since 2004.
The AVP-HSP must be a highly visible member of the University community and continuously engaged with University stakeholders, communicating and demonstrating OHSP’s commitment to being a collaborative partner with departments and divisions across the institution. The AVP-HSP ensures that the 14-member OHSP team is likewise knowledgeable, skilled, trained, and engaged in serving the good of the broader University community in thoughtful, thorough, and objective engagements.
The AVP will have well-developed and tested leadership and collaboration qualities, extensive research compliance expertise, and experience working with clinical, translational, and behavioral researchers. They will have the highest level of integrity and will demonstrate a track record of developing, mentoring, and supporting diverse and high-functioning teams.
Viable candidates will have at least 10 years of directly relevant experience, including in positions in which they had supervisory responsibility. If they are not coming from a peer academic or medical institution, they will demonstrate the ability to learn quickly and will have relevant research leadership experience with large, matrixed, and highly complicated organizations. A bachelor’s degree is required; a master’s degree in a field that entails working with human subjects and Certified IRB Professional designation are preferred.

Associate Vice President for Human Subjects Protection

The Department of Behavioral and Social Sciences at the University of Montevallo invites applications for a tenure-track position in history at the level of assistant professor, beginning Fall 2024. Job Duties:

Primary responsibilities will be to didactic year students; however, all principal faculty will be fully integrated into the clinical year of the program and will provide graduate level instruction in all phases of the program. This position will assist the program director in the review, planning and development of the program. The candidate will participate in the accreditation process including ongoing course assessments, student assessments, remediation, faculty/staff assessments, program assessments, competency evaluations, accreditation site visits and data collection. This position actively participates in student recruitment and admissions (both undergraduate and graduate physician assistant studies) and student advising (both undergraduate and undergraduate). The position includes emphasis on service and scholarly activities for one’s own growth and development and the benefit of the institution and program. Candidates should have a strong interest in designing enriching experiences for students that foster community engagement, holistic views of medicine and deeper understanding of human behavior. The Chief, Division of Hematology/Oncology is the academic, clinical, and administrative leader of the Division of Hematology/Oncology at SUNY Upstate. With the support and dedication of the new Chair of Medicine (<a href="https://www.upstate.edu/news/articles/2023/2023-03-20-taub.php" target="_blank">Cynthia Taub, MD, MBA</a>), the Division Chief has the opportunity to build a nationally recognized program while leading and directing programmatic, clinical, research and educational development within the Division, and will liaise with other divisions, departments, and institutional leadership in the SUNY Upstate Cancer Center.
The Ideal Candidate
The candidate should be an outstanding physician with a history of successful leadership experience, knowledge of the market forces impacting cancer healthcare delivery, and evidence of mentoring/training and scholarship.&nbsp;
The Organization
The Division of Hematology/Oncology at SUNY Upstate is on an upward trajectory and home to a highly talented group of 16 faculty members, additional advanced practice providers, clinical research associates, and operates a 3-year hematology/oncology fellowship program (12 fellows). The Upstate Cancer Center is the leading cancer program in Central New York providing world-class multidisciplinary care for the nearly 1.8 million residents of Central New York integrated with robust research and educational programs.&nbsp; The Cancer Center operates out of a dedicated 150,000 square foot state-of-art facility adjacent to the main academic campus that supports comprehensive multidisciplinary cancer programs. Regional cancer care is provided in 8 satellite offices with a new multidisciplinary center opening in 2023. Clinical research is supported by dedicated Cancer Center administrative personnel and integrated with a strong core of basic and translational investigators. The Cancer Center is in the process of growing operations to support the needs of the community and its future pursuit of NCI designation. SUNY Upstate Medical University is one of three academic medical centers of the State University of New York, with an annual budget of more than $1.8B.
