Special Education (SPED) Teacher


Position Summary

The Special Education (SPED) Teacher provides individualized instruction and support to students with disabilities in accordance with their Individualized Education Programs (IEPs). The SPED Teacher collaborates with general education teachers, related service providers, administrators, and families to ensure students receive appropriate educational services in the least restrictive environment while promoting academic achievement, independence, and social-emotional growth.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

  • Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs) that meet federal, state, and local requirements.
  • Plan and deliver differentiated instruction based on students' unique learning needs and abilities.
  • Assess student progress using formal and informal assessment tools and maintain accurate records.
  • Modify curriculum, instructional materials, and teaching strategies to support student success.
  • Collaborate with general education teachers to implement accommodations and modifications.
  • Participate in multidisciplinary team meetings, eligibility determinations, and annual IEP reviews.
  • Maintain compliance with all special education laws, regulations, and district policies.
  • Communicate regularly with parents and guardians regarding student progress, goals, and concerns.
  • Create and maintain a safe, inclusive, and positive classroom environment that encourages learning and independence.
  • Implement positive behavior interventions and behavior support plans as needed.
  • Coordinate with related service providers, including speech-language pathologists, occupational therapists, physical therapists, psychologists, and counselors.
  • Utilize instructional technology and evidence-based practices to enhance student learning.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student records and information in accordance with applicable laws.
  • Participate in professional development activities and staff meetings.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the school administrator.

Qualifications

Required

  • Bachelor's degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • Valid state teaching certification/licensure in Special Education.
  • Knowledge of IDEA, Section 504, ADA, and other applicable special education laws and regulations.
  • Strong classroom management and instructional skills.
  • Excellent written, verbal, and interpersonal communication skills.
  • Ability to work collaboratively with staff, students, families, and community partners.
  • Proficiency with educational technology and student data systems.

Preferred

  • Master's degree in Special Education or a related field.
  • Experience teaching students with diverse disabilities.
  • Experience developing and implementing IEPs.
  • Training in behavior intervention strategies, assistive technology, or specialized instructional methodologies.

  • Understanding of child development and evidence-based instructional practices.
  • Ability to differentiate instruction for diverse learning needs.
  • Strong organizational, time management, and problem-solving skills.
  • Ability to collect, analyze, and interpret student data.
  • Commitment to equity, inclusion, and student-centered learning.
  • Ability to establish positive relationships with students, families, and colleagues.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand, walk, bend, lift, and assist students as needed throughout the school day.
  • Ability to lift up to 40 pounds with or without reasonable accommodation.
  • Ability to perform duties in classroom, school, and community-based instructional settings.
