This is a part-time position (20 hours a week). Applicant will work under limited supervision, provides human services, support, education and guidance to crime victims and witnesses through the prosecutorial phase of the criminal justice system in the District Attorney's Office. Work involves assisting in preparing victims and witness for trial, providing or arranging a variety of support services to promote emotional healing and educating victims/witnesses regarding the various processes involved with the case, and serving as a liaison between victims/witnesses and prosecutors and other law enforcement personnel. Works closely with other Victim/Witness Advocates to ensure case coverage is maintained. Reports to the Victim/Witness Coordinator.

ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:

The following essential job functions and examples of duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive; positions assigned to this class may not perform all of the duties listed.

  • Initiates contact with victims and witnesses upon review of case reports
  • Provides advocacy and support to victims, witnesses and families by performing the following services: accompaniment to court appearances; educating and familiarizing victims/witnesses about the judicial process; answering questions about the judicial process; providing follow-up support/services.
  • Assists with completing required forms and reports; forwards same to appropriate officials and agencies; maintains case records and files, documenting statistical information in the judicial database.
  • Obtains interpreters for victims and witnesses if needed.
  • Performs other related work as required.

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Two to three years in working in social work, criminal justice or a related field or equivalent experience.
  • Strong interpersonal communications skills a must requires the ability to interact with people of all temperaments; must be adaptable to performing under stress or when confronted with persons acting under stress.
  • Strong computer skills and the ability to learn data entry programs quickly.
  • The ability to apply principles of logical thinking to define problems, collect data, establish facts, and draw valid conclusions.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of community resources available to victims.
  • Knowledge about the effects of abuse and trauma on individuals, children, families and community.
  • Familiarization with the Colorado Victim's Rights Amendment.
  • Ability to demonstrate patience, tact, and compassion with persons that are emotionally distraught.

WORK ENVIRONMENT:

  • Generally confined to an office or courtroom and is mostly sedentary. Minimal lifting may be required.
