Summary: Responsible for assisting the Lead Teacher in developing and implementing a program of activities that promotes the social, emotional and physical development of each child enrolled in a group in accordance with Head Start Performance Standards and Title 29: District of Columbia Municipal Regulations (DCMR). The duties and responsibilities will be carried out under the direction of the Lead Teacher.
 
Essential Duties:
1. Perform the instructional and classroom management processes for teachers who are absent for a day or longer periods of time and/or relieve classroom teachers during their lunch or breaks.
2. Assist lead teacher in implementing with fidelity High Scope, an evidenced-based curriculum according to policies and procedures.
3. Assist lead teacher with the full implementation of Head Start, NAEYC, and Title 29: DCMR performance standards, policies and procedures, regulations and guidelines in the day-to-day operation of an early childhood development center, including developmentally appropriate practices.
4. Observe each child daily to assess skills, interests, and needs and use this information to facilitate learning and growth.
5. Develop a positive relationship with each child and promote the development of self-esteem and self-discipline.
6. Assist lead teacher with the maintenance a well-organized, safe and attractive classroom environment conducive to the optimal growth and development of children.
7. Assist lead teacher with classroom maintenance ensuring a safe and sanitary condition by completing daily health and safety checklists in the classrooms and playground.
8. Ensure universal precautions are kept at all times, including washing of hands upon entering classroom, after diapering, toileting, before and after meals, and after contact with bodily fluids.
9. Assist the lead teacher with the implementation of health procedures on a daily basis, including following medication administration procedures, tooth brushing, sanitation, and administering First Aid/CPR.
10. Assist with evacuation of children during fire drills, natural disasters, and any other emergencies, which may occur.
11. Attend all staff meetings and professional learning provided by Bright Beginnings.
12. Keep abreast of current knowledge in the field of Early Childhood Education.
13. Maintains confidentiality of children and families at all times.

Qualifications:

Your Role as a Special Education Paraprofessional:

<li>Provide Classroom Support - Assist students with academics, social skills, and daily living needs while adapting to all age groups, elementary through high school</li>
<li>Monitor &amp; Track Student Progress - Observe behavior, document notes, and share updates with the team to adjust strategies.</li>
<li>Support Self-Help Skills - Help students with toileting, feeding, and hygiene to promote independence.</li>
<li>Ensure a Safe Learning Environment - Use de-escalation techniques and calming strategies to maintain a supportive, structured environment.</li>
<li>Collaborate with Teachers &amp; Families - Partner with teachers, therapists, BCBAs, and parents to provide consistent and individualized support.</li>
</ul>
Minimum Requirements
<ul>
<li>High school diploma or equivalent.</li>
<li>Experience using or supporting Augmentative and Alternative Communication (AAC) systems or devices.</li>
<li>At least six (6) months of professional experience supporting individuals with disabilities, including direct care or skill-building (e.g., toileting, feeding, hygiene, daily living).
<ul>
<li> Babysitting experience not applicable. </li>
<li>Preferred: Direct Support Professionals (DSPs), Behavior Technicians, or Patient Care Assistants (PCAs).</li>
</ul>
</li>
<li>Strong verbal and written communication skills to follow learning plans and work with staff.</li>
<li>Ability to use behavior support strategies calmly and professionally.</li>
<li>Patient, caring, and dependable demeanor.</li>
<li>Team-oriented with good listening skills.</li>
<li>Basic computer skills (email, Word, Excel, Google Docs).</li>
