Location: San Jose, CA

Reports To: Operations Manager

FLSA Status: Exempt


Position Summary


The Estimator is responsible for analyzing customer requests for quotes (RFQs), reviewing engineering drawings, and preparing accurate cost estimates for machining, fabrication, and assembly projects. This role involves evaluating material, labor, tooling, and subcontracting requirements to generate competitive and profitable pricing proposals.


Key Responsibilities

  • RFQ Review & Analysis
  • Review and interpret customer quotes, blueprints, 3D models, and technical specifications.
  • Identify machining processes, materials, tolerances, and finishing requirements.
  • Assess project feasibility, risks, and special requirements.
  • Cost Estimation
  • Calculate labor hours, machine time, setup time, and tooling needs.
  • Source and price raw materials, outside processing, and subcontracted services.
  • Develop accurate cost breakdowns and pricing proposals.
  • Quote Preparation & Submission
  • Prepare detailed cost estimates, lead times, and formal quotations for customer review.
  • Work closely with sales, engineering, and production to ensure accuracy and competitiveness.
  • Follow up on submitted quotes and provide clarification when needed.
  • Collaboration & Support
  • Communicate with vendors to obtain pricing for materials, tooling, and services.
  • Partner with production teams to validate assumptions on machine capabilities, cycle times, and efficiencies.
  • Support sales and business development efforts by providing timely and competitive quotes.
  • Continuous Improvement
  • Maintain and update cost estimating databases and standard pricing templates.
  • Identify opportunities to streamline estimating processes and reduce cost variances.
  • Stay current with industry pricing trends, material costs, and machining technologies.

Work Environment

  • Office and manufacturing shop environment with regular interaction with engineering, production, and quality teams.
  • Occasional visits to the shop floor to verify machining processes and capabilities.
  • Standard business hours with potential overtime during peak workloads.

Requirements:

Qualifications

Required:

  • High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, or related field preferred.
  • 5+ years of estimating experience in a machine shop, precision machining, or manufacturing environment.
  • Strong blueprint reading and GD&T interpretation skills.
  • Knowledge of machining processes, materials, and tooling in the following sectors: CNC Mill 3-Axis/5-Axis, CNC Lathe, Wire EDM, Lapping, Grinding
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel
  • Excellent math, analytical, and communication skills.

Eligibility Requirement:

Because some of our projects are subject to U.S. government regulations (ITAR), this position is open to individuals who are U.S. citizens, or lawful permanent residents (green card holders).

Preferred:

  • Experience with CAD/CAM software and 3D models.
  • Familiarity with aerospace, defense, or medical device manufacturing requirements.
  • Understanding of ISO 9001 / AS9100 / ISO 13485 quality standards.
