Job Description
We are seeking a Music Teacher to join our team here at Near North Montessori for the 2025/2026 school year!
Position Overview:
The Near North Montessori (NNM) Music Teacher teaches private instrument classes to enrolled students. The teacher works to enhance students’ skills and techniques on a specific instrument and fosters appreciation of music, self-esteem and interpersonal skills in a safe, stimulating environment consistent with the school’s mission. This position also maintains positive interpersonal relationships with students, parents, staff, and community members.
Schedule: 40 hours per week, typically Monday through Friday, with shifts falling between 8:00am and 6:00pm during the school year, with adjustments or additional time as needed. This role may also include an opportunity to work summer camps if desired.
Essential Functions and Responsibilities:
- Teach music theory, history, and practical skills (vocal or instrumental).
- Develop and implement engaging lesson plans tailored to different age groups and skill levels.
- Evaluate student progress through various methods, providing feedback and guidance.
- Organize and lead rehearsals, prepare students for concerts, exams, and other performances.
- Teach students how to play various instruments, focusing on technique, posture, and musicality.
- Train students in vocal techniques, including breathing, diction, and projection.
- Lead and direct school choirs, bands, or orchestras.
- Maintain a positive and productive learning environment.
- Encourage and inspire students to develop their musical abilities and passion for music.
- Work with other teachers and school staff to integrate music into the broader curriculum.
- Communicate effectively with students, parents, and colleagues.
- Knowledge of or willingness to learn foundational Near North Montessori (NNM) philosophy and practices, models class practices that align with Montessori
- Able to work and engage with students ages 4-14 years of age in both individual and group settings
- Responsible for designing and delivering age and ability appropriate group instrument lessons
- Works actively and collaboratively with STEM & Extensions Coordinator, teachers, students and families to support the growth of each student; scheduling private lessons with each party as appropriate
- Organizes and conducts two holiday concerts during the school year - Winter and Spring
- Respects individual differences in children's abilities and interests, treating each one with respect and dignity
- Prepare the physical space daily so it is clean and ready for instruction
- Completes all reports and paperwork as required by the Auxiliary Programs Office to track lessons and attendance
- Professional experience and/or a personal commitment to increasing understanding of topics and initiatives related to diversity, access, equity, and belonging
- Acquire professional training in the educational field by attending educational conferences, training workshops and other related activities
- Perform other duties and responsibilities as required, assigned, or requested
Qualifications
Bachelors degree in similar field or related level of experience, Masters preferred
- Three (3)+ years teaching music classes in a school or non profit organization
- Effective communication and interpersonal skills
- Effective time management and organizational skills
- Academically current in the general discipline
- Strong understanding of student characteristics and faculty needs at various levels
- Ability to commit to equitable education practices, anti-bias, anti-racist work and learning
- Ability to teach a wide range of ages and experience levels required
- Experience in performing and teaching a wide range of musical styles
- Available to work evenings and/or weekends strongly preferred
- Musical Proficiency: Strong playing skills on one or more instruments or voice, and a solid understanding of music theory.
- Teaching Skills: Ability to plan, deliver, and assess effective music lessons.
- Communication Skills: Clear and engaging communication with students of all ages and abilities.
- Organizational Skills: Ability to manage schedules, materials, and student progress.
- Patience and Creativity: Ability to adapt teaching methods to individual student needs and inspire creativity.
- Enthusiasm and Passion: A genuine love for music and a desire to share that passion with others.
- Interpersonal Skills: Ability to build positive relationships with students and colleagues.
- Problem-Solving Skills: Ability to address challenges and adapt to unexpected situations.
Additional Information
Pay Information: The salary range for this position is $55,000 - $60,000 based on skills and experience.
