Controller - Construction Company
Position Overview
Seeking an experienced Controller to lead accounting and finance for a growing construction company. This role owns financial reporting, job costing and project accounting, cash flow and treasury, budgeting and forecasting, internal controls and compliance. The Controller partners with operations and project teams to deliver timely, accurate financial information, optimize cost control, manage billing and retainage, support bonding and tax compliance, and drive process improvements and BI-enabled reporting.
Key Responsibilities
- Oversee full-charge accounting functions including month-end close, general ledger maintenance, and preparation of financial statements (P&L, balance sheet, cash flow).
- Manage job costing and project accounting processes: establish cost structures, maintain job cost reports, monitor WIP and revenue recognition, and reconcile job-to-ledger balances.
- Prepare and review AIA billing, progress billing, retainage management, change order accounting, and ensure timely invoicing and collections.
- Lead budgeting, forecasting and rolling cash flow models to support leadership decisions and ensure adequate liquidity for projects.
- Control accounts payable, accounts receivable, payroll administration (including certified/union payroll), billing & invoicing, bank reconciliations and cash management.
- Drive cost control initiatives, variance analysis, and financial modeling to identify margin improvement and efficiency opportunities.
- Maintain contract management support for subcontractor agreements, change orders, lien waivers, bonding & surety documentation and subcontractor compliance.
- Establish and maintain robust internal controls, SOX-ready processes where applicable, and support external and internal audits and tax compliance efforts.
- Develop and deliver KPIs, dashboards and BI reports to senior leadership and project managers for real-time project performance visibility.
- Manage fixed assets, depreciation schedules and capital expenditure accounting.
- Implement and optimize accounting systems and ERP/job-costing software; lead system upgrades and integrations with operations tools.
- Supervise, mentor and develop accounting staff; foster cross-functional collaboration with project management, operations and procurement teams.
Qualifications
- Bachelors degree in Accounting, Finance or related field; CPA or CMA strongly preferred.
- 7+ years of progressive accounting experience with at least 4 years in construction accounting or project-based industries as a senior accountant or controller.
- Deep knowledge of GAAP, revenue recognition, WIP accounting, job costing, project accounting and construction-specific billing (AIA/progress billing) and retainage processes.
- Proven experience with budgeting, forecasting, cash flow management, financial modeling, variance analysis and month-end close discipline.
- Hands-on experience with accounts payable/receivable, payroll (including certified/union payroll), bank reconciliations, tax compliance and audit processes.
- Familiarity with subcontractor management, lien waivers, bonding & surety requirements and contract/change order accounting.
- Strong technical skills: advanced Excel, experience with ERP/job-costing systems (e.g., Sage 300, Viewpoint, Procore/ERP integrations or similar), and BI/dashboarding tools (Power BI, Tableau or equivalent).
- Demonstrated experience developing internal controls, SOX compliance and supporting external audits.
- Excellent leadership, communication and stakeholder management skills with the ability to translate financial data for operations and executive teams.
- Detail-oriented, organized and able to manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced construction environment.
- Experience with procurement, cost estimating coordination, fixed assets & depreciation and KPI development is highly desirable.
