About NRHA Founded in 1940, the Norfolk Redevelopment and Housing Authority (NRHA) provides low-income families in Norfolk, Virginia with safe and well-maintained housing. It also plans and administers large-scale residential redevelopment programs within Norfolk.

NRHA is seeking a qualified candidate for the HCV Internposition.


Position Summary

Under general supervision, performs moderately complex secretarial and administrative support services for the Housing Choice Voucher section. Work requires the exercise of independent judgment and initiative,contact with HCV applicants and participants, external parties, and NRHA staff.

Essential Functions

Receives, responds, and distributes mail and other written materials, opens, date-stamps, reviews, and prioritizes mail and faxed material; composes and types correspondence involving routine inquiries; routes mail to other NRHA staff as appropriate; receives and signs for hand delivered mail; seals and posts mail; and prepares and transmits faxed material.

Types correspondence, memoranda, and reports using personal computer and word processing software. Prepares documents from written drafts, editing for spelling and grammar.

Performs a variety of routine administrative detailfor the HCV section, such as preparing check requests; and keeping logs and copying W-9s, HAP contracts, owner change forms, disseminating inspections to the appropriate staff person base on the pass or fail status; prepare and send out rental increase requests determination.

Performs related work as required.

Minimum Qualifications

Senior High School education and 3 to 5 years progressively responsible administrative support experience in data entry and clerical/administrative support; or any equivalent combination of training, education, and experience necessary to obtain the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

Knowledge, Skills, and Abilities

Considerable knowledge of clerical/secretarial procedures and practices.

Considerable knowledge of Housing Operations organization, programs, policies, and practices.

Considerable knowledge of the public housing and Section 8 voucher application process.

Operational knowledge of NRHA organization, programs, policies, and practices

Operational knowledge of personal computer, Microsoft applications, printer, photocopier, and facsimile machine

Skill in typing accurately and proficiently in a wide range of formats, such as correspondence, memoranda, and reports.

Ability to interpret, apply, and communicate procedures, policies, and services.

Ability to understand and carry out complex oral and written instructions.

Skill and ability to establish and maintain complex records, organize data, and prepare statistical tables.

Ability to make decisions in accordance with established procedures and policies. Ability to deal effectively and courteously with the public, residents, other employees, and others outside the organization. Includes ability to maintain confidentiality of all business-related information.

Ability to exercise independent judgment and initiative in the completion of complex administrative duties.

Physical Requirements

While performing the duties of this job, the intern is frequently required to sit, talk, see, or hear. The intern is occasionally required to stand and walk. The intern must occasionally lift and/or move up to 30 pounds. Job requires depth, color, and texture perception.
