General Accountability and Summary
The Mechanical & Piping Superintendent is responsible for overseeing field installation of tailings-related mechanical systems, including HDPE and steel piping, pump stations, tanks, and VFDs. Working closely with the Owner’s team and design engineers, this role ensures safe and effective delivery of TSF infrastructure in support of mine restart objectives.
Key Responsibilities
- Supervise field installation of HDPE piping systems, steel pipe, valves, tanks, and mechanical accessories
- Oversee fusion welding, pressure testing, flushing, and commissioning readiness activities
- Review construction drawings and vendor documentation to validate technical compliance and constructability
- Coordinate construction activities across scopes and workfronts, including civil and electrical interfaces
- Monitor contractor productivity and progress against lookahead schedules and milestones
- Enforce environmental and safety controls specific to tailings infrastructure, including containment and leak detection systems
- Participate in inspections, punch list walkdowns, and mechanical handover documentation
- Provide field-level leadership in addressing construction challenges and executing mitigation plans
- Track and close out action items, ensuring alignment between contractors, Owner’s team, and engineering consultants
- Support overall delivery of TSF systems in line with project safety, cost, and schedule targets
Skills & Competencies
Technical Skills:
- Strong knowledge of HDPE piping, fusion welding, and tailings transport infrastructure
- Experience with pump station assembly, piping QA/QC, and pressure testing protocols
- Skilled in interpreting mechanical drawings, isometrics, and vendor technical packages
Leadership Competencies:
- Field-focused leader with a disciplined approach to safe construction execution
- Effective communicator across contractors, engineers, and Owner stakeholders
- Strong decision-maker in remote, schedule-driven environments
Experience, Qualifications & Education
- 10+ years in mechanical/piping construction, with TSF or slurry system experience preferred.
- HDPE welding/fusion oversight background is an asset.
- Relevant trade certification or diploma in Mechanical Engineering or Construction Technology.
- Experience in database or document control software would be an asset.
- Previous experience acting as an Owner’s representative would be an asset.
- Additional functional language skills in French and/or Spanish would be an asset.
