Opticians will work as part of a team of eye care professionals that include Ophthalmologists and Optometrists. Their customers are patients that have had an eye exam and received a prescription for corrective medically necessary lenses. In this role, you may measure the head and each eye of a customer, dispense the correct products, and maintain your knowledge of current products and trends.

Some non-licensed opticians work under licensed opticians, while others operate independently.

Fills ophthalmic eyeglass and/or contact lens prescriptions and fits and adapts lenses and frames by performing the following duties.

  • Customer and Personal Service — Knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer and personal services. This includes customer needs assessment, meeting quality standards for services, and evaluation of customer satisfaction.
  • 2-3 years’ experience working in the Ophthalmology/Optometry Office.
  • Interpreting the results of eye examinations, using prescriptions written by Optometrists and Ophthalmologists.

· Excellent attention to detail, particularly for interpreting prescriptions and checking

Lenses.

· Strong communication skills and the ability to explain technical information clearly to

customers.

· The ability to work effectively as part of a team.

  • Advising patients on frame weights, materials, styles and colors
  • Recommending lenses, coatings and frames to suit customers’ needs.
  • Measuring customers to determine suitable types and styles of frames.
  • Adjusting frames so they fit properly.
  • Measure patients' bridge and eye size, temple length, vertex distance, pupillary distance, and optical centers of eyes, using measuring devices.
  • Preparing orders for glasses and/or contact lenses by checking prescriptions, lens thickness and other specifications.
  • Making sure that orders for glasses and/or contact lenses have been processed accurately
  • Maintain records of patient prescriptions, work orders, and payments.
  • Perform administrative duties such as tracking inventory and sales, submitting patient insurance information, entering vision claims on applicable vision provider website and verifying claims paid correctly and posting payments in Flexsys point of sale system.
  • Heat, shape, or bend plastic or metal frames to adjust eyeglasses to fit clients, using pliers and hands.
  • Repairs damaged product as necessary.
  • Maintains high standards of clinical hygiene at all times.

Supervisory Responsibilities: This position has no supervisory responsibilities. Responsibilities may include training team members, planning, assigning and overseeing work schedules, addressing complaints and resolving problems.

Qualifications: To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. Must be comfortable dealing in proximity with the public. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill and/or ability required.

  • The ability to ascertain why a patient may be experiencing difficulty with their eyewear and resolve the situation once the problem has been determined.

Education and/or Experience: Associate degree (A.A.) or equivalent from two-year college or technical school; three years apprenticeship on-the-job training or one to two years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.

Language Skills: Ability to read and interpret documents such as safety rules, operating and maintenance instructions, and procedure manuals. Ability to write routine reports and correspondence. Ability to speak effectively to patients or team members of the organization.

Mathematical Skills: Ability to calculate figures and amounts such as discounts, interest, commissions, proportions, percentages, area, circumference, and volume. Ability to apply concepts of basic algebra.

Reasoning Ability: Ability to apply common sense understanding to carry out instructions furnished in written, oral, or diagram form.

  • Certificates, Licenses, Registrations: State Dispensing License (if required), American Board of Opticianry (if required) and national Contact Lens Examiners (if required). Must complete one of the following…
  • A two-year course of study in opticianry in a college level program
  • Practical experience and training (apprenticeship) of grade and character satisfactory to the board for not less than three years under the supervision of a licensed dispensing optician, a licensed optometrist, or a licensed ophthalmologist.
  • If the applicant holds an unrestricted dispensing optician license in another State, the length of time for that State’s training and supervised experience requirements for initial licensure shall be considered as time toward fulfilling Ohio’s three (3) year requirement.

Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment: The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those a team member encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. While performing the duties of this job, the team member is regularly exposed to moving mechanical parts. The team member is occasionally exposed to fumes or airborne particles. The team member occasionally is exposed to communicable diseases common to a medical environment. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
