DIRECT REPORTS: Shared responsibilities with other Route Supervisors
POSITION SUMMARY:
The Route Supervisor oversees activities across multiple lines of business, including commercial, residential and roll off sharing responsibilities with other Route Supervisor to ensure all routes are completed efficiently and safely. Responsible for the coordination of the end-of-day activities, maximize productivity and ensure prompt, courteous and efficient service in a safe manner to all customers. Communicate with drivers to assist to resolves issues while on route and prepares the team for the following day’s operations.
DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES include but are not limited to the following:
Employee Engagement:
- Manage the end-of-day activities to communicate key issues regarding service, equipment failures, or safety incidents to the operations team.
- Support operations, including but not limited to tasks related to drivers, dispatch, customer service, and data entry.
- Create a collaborative, communicative team environment and drive employee engagement with the Company.
- Lead by example to motivate the team and encourage positive behaviors.
- Conduct regular performance evaluations and provide feedback to drivers.
- Ensure drivers comply with company policies, traffic regulations, and safety standards.
Route Management:
- Partners with operations team to organize and plan for the week, month & peak periods for best utilization of staffing levels, adjusting next day schedules to address call outs, route changes, ensuring all routes are assigned to qualified staff.
- Use GPS, route planning software, or manual methods to optimize labor utilization, manage hours, and reduce unnecessary overtime expenses and time efficiency.
- Collaborate with the operations team to adjust routes based on changing priorities, road conditions, or other factors.
- Establish productivity goals, ensure adherence to operating standards, optimize labor utilization, manage hours, and minimize unnecessary overtime expenses per agreed plans/goals.
- Lead drivers to meet and exceed productivity goals and expectations for all routes.
- Collaborate with other Route Supervisors to reduce route hours to the extent possible with techniques such as load balancing, service frequency, and container right-sizing (size and quantity).
- Operational support may include driving company vehicles in other departments to complete the day’s work if necessary.
Customer Service:
- Troubleshoots and resolves potential delivery and pick-up problems before they result in service issues. Initiates communication to customers while drivers are on-site/location, resolving any delay issues while ensuring customer satisfaction.
- Visit and resolve customers' issues, perform customer on-site checks to resolve safety issues and service issues, offering alternatives agreeable to both Customer and MarBorg Industries.
- Handles & fields incoming calls and e-mails from customer service and manages requests for all pick-up or delivery on any container movement (Carts, Bins, etc.).
- Interacts with MarBorg customers and office/operational staff to achieve desired productivity and optimal delivery goals.
- Answer calls from drivers requesting pick-ups and assign orders as appropriate.
- Ensure that drivers provide exceptional customer service and always maintain a professional attitude.
- Collaborate with the Liquid Waste Department to plan and ensure the availability of equipment requests for special events as needed.
Inventory Management:
- Monitor and manage the inventory of carts and bins.
- Report low levels to the Parts Specialist to ensure the timely ordering and stocking of necessary products and supplies.
- Coordinates with Fleet Maintenance Manager to ensure we always have adequate inventory of 1.5 and 4-yard dumpsters.
Coaching and Development:
- Shared responsibility for training, developing, and mentoring employees & conducting periodic performance assessments. Including coaching and disciplining employees who violate company policies and procedures as provided in MarBorg’s Employee Handbook, Driver Handbook, and safety protocols.
- Provide timely and consistent touchpoints with frontline employees.
- Regular review of best practices to enhance daily performance.
- Focus on understanding and progress of employee safety and productivity goals.
- Identify and address improvement opportunities to ensure continued success.
- Actively practice and document coaching conversations.
- Check in with the employees as they arrive at the end of the day and provide any necessary feedback.
Performance Management:
- Assist the operations team in conducting root cause and detailed investigations into any injury or incidents that occur during the shift, ensuring all documentation is completed before closing. Ensure consistent discipline and retraining. Facilitate post-incident ride-along, check for understanding, and document a detailed summary of the discussion.
- Teaching and developing an understanding of safe truck operation, procedures, and policies.
- Daily review and audits of documentation related to route operations (e.g., Logs, driver times, attendance, open or incomplete paperwork submission and disposal tickets), following up where appropriate to validate route benchmarks are factual and fully optimized each day of the week.
- Lead by example to ensure safety practices, policies, and code of conduct remain paramount with each employee.
Safety and Compliance:
- Ensure all routes comply with safety standards, including vehicle pre/post trip inspections and regulatory requirements.
- Work to remove unsafe conditions or situations from drivers’ routes.
- Monitor driver’s adherence to safety protocols and recommend corrective actions when necessary.
- Ensure drivers complete paperwork & check for accuracy in accordance with DOT regulations and company policy.
- Ensure proper documentation of all incidents. Partner with safety to implement any necessary protocol changes to eliminate similar situations.
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
Collaborative effort to oversee the activities of commercial, residential, and roll-off. Carries out supervisory responsibilities in accordance with the organization’s policies and applicable laws. Responsibilities include training employees; planning, assigning, observing & auditing routes and directing work; appraising performance; rewarding and disciplining employees; addressing complaints and resolving problems. Be an influential leader with a positive can-do attitude.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, ABILITIES, AND EXPERIENCE:
- Minimum two years of prior leadership or supervisory experience. Strong knowledge of the waste management industry a plus.
- Two years plus of transportation and logistics experience preferred.
- A results-driven Supervisor who will support, encourage, develop, and lead your team, while working alongside managers and customers.
- Strong critical-thinking skills and a proactive problem solver.
- Excellent communication and interpersonal skills.
- Scheduling, personnel management, and training.
- Ability to multitask with strong organizational skills.
- Computer skills including proficiency in Microsoft Office.
- Valid driver’s license, Class B with air brakes a plus.
- Tackle tough technical problems but also collaborate and evangelize best practices across teams.
- Must be able to work the shift between the hours of 8:30 am - 6:30 pm and be flexible to work earlier to ensure coverage as needed.
- Must be able to work a rotating Saturday schedule and the Saturday following a holiday as required to support operations.
EDUCATION
High school diploma or general education degree (GED); and two to five years related experience and/or training; or equivalent combination of education and experience.
