This role involves managing daily operations on-site, ensuring projects are completed safely, on time, and within budget. The Asphalt Crew Foreman will be responsible for operating and maintain heavy equipment when crew is unable to, supervise crew members, and ensure adherence to project specifications and safety regulations.

Key Responsibilities

  • Crew Supervision: Lead and manage a paving crew, assign tasks, provide direction, and ensuring efficient teamwork to meet project deadlines.
  • Equipment Operation: Safely operate and maintain paving equipment, including asphalt pavers, rollers, skid steers, and other machinery, to complete paving tasks effectively.
  • Project Coordination: Read and interpret construction plans, coordinate daily activities, and ensure work aligns with project specifications, grades, and depths.
  • Quality Control: Monitor the quality of asphalt application, including preparatory work, paving patterns, compaction, and material consistency, to meet industry standards.
  • Safety Compliance: Enforce OSHA/MSHA safety regulations, maintain a safe work environment, and conduct daily pre- and post-inspections of equipment.
  • Problem Solving: Address on-site challenges, troubleshoot equipment issues, and implement solutions to keep projects on track.
  • Communication: Maintain clear communication with crew members, operations, and Director of Operations to report progress, issues, or material needs.
  • Training: Assist in training less experienced crew members on equipment operation, safety protocols, and paving techniques.
  • Other: Miscellaneous duties as assigned.

Qualifications

  • Experience: Minimum of 5 years in road construction or asphalt paving, with at least 2–3 years in a supervisory or leadership role, preferred (e.g., as a paver operator or crew lead).
  • Education: High school diploma or equivalent preferred; certificate programs in heavy equipment operation are a plus but not required.
  • Licenses: Valid driver’s license required; Class A CDL preferred. Must have an insurable driving record.
  • Skills:
    1. In-depth knowledge of asphalt paving processes, including grades, drainage, and compaction.
    2. Proficiency in operating paving machines, rollers, skid steers, and related equipment.
    3. Strong leadership, communication, and problem-solving skills.
    4. Ability to read and interpret construction plans and specifications.
  • Driver’s License: Valid driver’s license required. Must meet insurability standard. The ability to tow trailers or transport equipment is a plus.
  • Additional Requirements: Ability to pass a drug test as part of a drug-free workplace policy.
  • Phone: Must have cell phone to clock in and out daily, log jobs, and follow other company communications.

Working Conditions

  • Work is performed in an outdoor environment at residential, commercial, or municipal properties, depending on the project.
  • Exposure to dust, noise, chemicals, heavy materials, and seasonal weather is common; some tasks may involve heights or confined spaces.
  • Schedule is typically Monday through Friday, with occasional overtime or weekend work during peak construction or landscaping seasons (spring through fall).
  • Rare but possible multi-day, out-of-town trips, including long-distance travel, and overnight stays.
