Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON)

Location: Washington, DC
Setting: Skilled Nursing Facility (SNF)

Position Summary

The Assistant Director of Nursing (ADON) supports the Director of Nursing in overseeing all clinical operations within the facility. This role ensures high-quality resident care, regulatory compliance, staff performance, and clinical outcomes. The ADON is a working clinical leader who can step in, stabilize operations, and drive accountability across the nursing team.

Key Responsibilities

Clinical Operations & Quality

  • Support oversight of daily nursing operations across all shifts
  • Ensure delivery of high-quality resident care consistent with federal and DC regulations
  • Monitor clinical outcomes, including hospital readmissions, infection control, and quality measures
  • Participate in QAPI initiatives and performance improvement planning

Staff Leadership & Development

  • Supervise, coach, and hold accountable nursing staff including RNs, LPNs, and CNAs
  • Assist with hiring, onboarding, and ongoing staff development
  • Address performance issues promptly and appropriately
  • Provide floor support as needed to maintain clinical standards

Regulatory Compliance

  • Maintain compliance with CMS, DC Department of Health, and facility policies
  • Assist with survey preparedness and lead response efforts during surveys
  • Ensure accurate and timely clinical documentation

Care Coordination

  • Collaborate with interdisciplinary team (therapy, social services, physicians)
  • Support care planning process and resident assessments
  • Assist with oversight of MDS process and reimbursement alignment

Operational Support

  • Step in for the Director of Nursing when needed
  • Assist with staffing, scheduling, and labor management
  • Participate in family communication and resident issue resolution

Qualifications

Required:

  • Active Registered Nurse license in Washington, DC in good standing OR ability to obtain within 30 days
  • Minimum 2+ years of nurse management experience in a skilled nursing facility (SNF)
  • Strong working knowledge of CMS regulations, survey process, and long-term care operations
  • Proven ability to lead teams and drive accountability

Preferred:

  • Prior experience as ADON, Unit Manager, or Nurse Supervisor in SNF
  • Experience with MDS, case mix, and reimbursement processes
  • BSN preferred
