Job Summary
Substitute Teachers will provide temporary coverage in our Head Start classrooms. As a Substitute Teacher, you will step into the role of the regular classroom teacher, ensuring the continuation of a safe, nurturing, and developmentally appropriate learning environment for preschool children. This is a great opportunity to contribute to the well-being and education of young children in our community and gain experience within the Head Start framework
Essential Duties and Responsibilities
- Maintain a safe and positive classroom environment that promotes learning and social-emotional development
- Supervise children in the classroom, during outdoor play, meals, and transitions, ensuring their safety and well-being at all times
- Follow established classroom routines and schedules
- Adhere to all Head Start Performance Standards, state licensing regulations, and program policies and procedures
- Implement the existing lesson plans and activities provided by the regular classroom teacher
- Engage children in age-appropriate activities that promote cognitive, social-emotional, physical, and language development
- Read stories, lead songs, and facilitate group activities
- Adapt activities as necessary to meet the diverse needs of the children in the classroom
- Follow any specific instructions or notes left by the regular classroom teacher
- Maintain confidentiality regarding children and families
Other Requirements
- Must pass a criminal background check and other required clearances
- Must have or be willing to obtain CPR and First Aid certification
- Must meet the physical requirements of the position, including the ability to lift and carry young children, bend, stoop, and actively engage with children
- Valid driver's license and reliable transportation is required
Schedule
- Monday-Friday
- Varied days and hours
Knowledge, Skills and abilities
- Ability to supervise and interact positively with young children
- Flexibility and adaptability to work in different classroom settings and with varying age groups (typically 3-5 years old in Head Start)
- Patience, enthusiasm, and a genuine interest in working with young children
- Ability to follow directions and work independently
- Basic understanding of classroom management techniques
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent is required
- Some experience working with preschool-aged children in a group setting is preferred
- Familiarity with early childhood development principles is a plus
