Job Description
This is a remote, advanced coding role requiring independent decision-making and operating under general supervision. The Inpatient Coder II is responsible for accurate assignment of ICD diagnosis and procedure codes and MS-DRGs for inpatient hospital services across a wide range of specialties including:
- Neurology
- Oncology
- Urology
- Transplant
- OB/Newborn
- Orthopedics
- Cardiology
- Critical Care
- Complex trauma and acutely ill patients
Coders collaborate with clinical documentation improvement specialists and communicate with providers primarily via electronic queries to ensure complete and accurate documentation.
Key Responsibilities
- Assign DRGs, diagnosis, and procedure codes accurately
- Abstract required information per facility guidelines
- Independently write and manage physician queries
- Assign Present on Admission (POA) indicators
- Maintain productivity and accuracy standards (≥95%)
- Code mortality and rehab cases per policy
- Handle Combine/Uncombine processes
- Submit rebuttals for insurance denials when requested
- Participate in special projects and other duties as assigned
Required Skills & Experience
- Minimum Experience:
- 1 year recent inpatient coding at an academic medical center
OR
- 3 years recent hospital inpatient coding experience
- Preferred Experience:
- 3+ years inpatient coding at an academic facility
- Technical Skills:
- Proficiency in coding complex inpatient cases
- Effective communication and adaptability to change
- Ability to work independently and meet productivity benchmarks
Education & Certifications
- Required Education:
- Completion of a Coding Certificate Program or Associate Degree in HIM (or equivalent)
- Preferred Education:
- Bachelor’s Degree in HIM (or equivalent)
- Required Certifications:
- Certified RHIA, RHIT, or CCS
