POSITION ANNOUNCEMENT
Laboratory Technician
Salary Grade 8 $38,725.00 - $46,026.00
The Research Foundation for Mental Hygiene, Inc. is seeking a qualified candidate to fill a full-time position of Laboratory Technician. The candidate selected for this position will work indoors in different settings and will handle all types of hazardous materials, including, but not limited to, flammables, acids, caustic, carcinogens, teratogens, explosives, etc. The candidate will also obtain samples of dangerous chemicals and substances. The selected candidate will perform chemical spill cleanups and assist with waste chemical pickups.
Physical requirements are essential to the job functions and require walking, sitting, bending/stooping, pushing/pulling, and minimal unassisted lifting (up to 40 pounds)
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Adhere to all applicable policies and procedures regarding biohazard waste management.
- Understand the requirements and storage protocols for hazardous waste.
- Ensure that biohazard waste and other chemical waste are collected and tagged correctly.
- Pickup of biohazardous waste by following the proper protocols for collection, tagging, autoclaving, and maintaining accurate records.
- Be knowledgeable about the proper steps for reporting incidents.
- Familiarize yourself with emergency procedures, including what to do and where to go in case of an emergency.
- Identify the locations of safety showers, eye wash stations, first aid kits, fire extinguishers, and other safety equipment in each area, ensuring that every new team member learns where these are located.
- Assist in updating databases as required.
- Serve as a role model for safety by adhering to all personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety requirements and by setting a positive example for peers.
- Sample Handling: Collect, label, and store biological and chemical samples.
- Calibrate, maintain, troubleshoot, and conduct preventive maintenance on complex lab instruments.
- Record, document, and report equipment logs in both written and electronic formats.
- Maintain glassware, manage supply inventory, and ensure compliance with safety protocols.
- Assist project teams, provide technical support, and communicate results to the scientists.
Minimum Qualifications:
- High school diploma or High School Equivalent Certificate.
- Candidate must be able to lift up to 40 pounds
Preferred Qualifications:
- Bachelor's degree from an accredited four-year college or university in Chemistry or a related field.
- Two years of related experience preferred
