Title: Optician
Supervisor(s): Vision Director/Practice Manager
Department: Vision Services (full-time)

Job Summary
Under the direction and leadership of the Vision Director/Practice Manager, the Optician assists the doctor(s) by performing medical/vision testing and gathering important health information. Attention to detail, superior listening skills, highly motivated, committed to success, patient focused and ability to follow directions. Their patients are people who have had an eye exam and received a prescription for corrective lenses. Opticians need to have a thorough understanding of the different types of optical aids available, and their duties.
General Duties and Responsibilities
- Contributing to a warm and welcoming health/vision care environment for patients and co-workers.
- Competing vision testing for doctors in preparation for examination.
- Communicating by phone and e-mail about patient appointments, orders, insurance, and billing.
- Assist patients with selecting frames according to style and color, recommending lenses, coatings, and frames to suit the patients.
- Selecting and explaining the proper lens offerings and lens treatments based on the patient's needs and prescription.
- Ordering patient's eyewear with accuracy.
- Checking in eyewear, adjusting frames so they fit properly and dispensing.
- Ordering and maintaining supply levels.
- Ordering new eyewear, and/or repairs.
- Working with vendors and reps to maintain frame stock.
- Working with insurance companies and billing team.
- General clerical duties, including accurate data entry with a variety of EHR software programs.
- Applicants will also be crossed trained in other areas of the office.
- Other duties as assigned.

Credentials and Experience
Required
- High school diploma or equivalent.
- Previous experience in optical health care settings.
- Experience working with indigent populations and community-based practices/programs.
Preferred
- Ophthalmic Dispensing certification or two years of ophthalmic apprenticeship training.
- ABO-NCLE certification by American Board of Opticianry (ABO) and National Contact Lens Examiners (NCLE).
- Experience using optical patient records software (Eye Cloud Pro, RevolutionEHR,etc…) or Athena 1 electronic health records (HER).
Special Requirements
Requires full range of body motion including manual and finger dexterity and eye/hand coordination. Requires sitting, standing and walking for extensive periods of time. Requires working under stressful conditions or working irregular hours. Requires frequent exposure to communicable diseases, body fluids, toxic substances, medicinal preparations and other conditions common to a clinic environment. The employee frequently is required to reach with hands and arms. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, peripheral vision, depth perception, and the ability to adjust focus. The ability to work with a moderate noise level in the work environment is required.
