Purpose:
The position is essential in seamlessly bridging the operations of both the hauling and recycling departments, ensuring effective material handling and transportation while upholding the highest standards of safety, efficiency, and environmental responsibility.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
- Perform a versatile range of duties to support both the hauling and recycling departments, including loading, hauling, tarping, delivering, and cleaning equipment.
- Operate authority-owned recycling equipment such as trucks, loaders, balers, can flatteners/sorters, and adapt to the varying needs of both departments.
- Perform recycling collection, materials processing, and routine maintenance of equipment.
- Conduct daily safety and maintenance inspections, ensuring adherence to DOT, DEP regulations, and on-site safety protocols.
- Actively adapt to the fluctuating demands of the hauling and recycling departments, demonstrating flexibility in tasks and scheduling.
- Provide customer service, handle questions and complaints, and maintain effective communication with all stakeholders.
- Complete necessary paperwork and documentation for both truck-related and recycling program activities.
- Participate in training and development opportunities to stay proficient in required skills and technologies.
- Offer guidance and mentorship to new employees and collaborate effectively within a team setting.
Knowledge and Skill Requirements:
- Possession of a valid Class "A" Commercial Driver's License (CDL).
- Familiarity with general construction and recycling operations, and an ability to quickly learn and adapt to new procedures and technologies.
- Strong interpersonal skills for effective public interaction and team collaboration.
- Ability to navigate and adhere to local, state, and federal transportation regulations, ensuring all activities comply with legal and environmental standards.
- Strong organizational skills with the capability to manage and prioritize tasks efficiently in a fast-paced and changing environment.
- Proficiency in using GPS and route management software to optimize routes, enhance efficiency, and ensure timely service.
- Solid understanding of waste management and recycling processes, including material sorting and handling, to effectively contribute to both departments' operations.
Physical Demands and Working Environment:
- Exposure to electrical hazards, chemicals, fumes, moving parts, and equipment under extreme weather conditions of both heat and cold.
- May encounter hazardous and/or toxic substances and must adhere to necessary safety measures to protect against eye, nose, and skin irritation.
- Physical demands include frequent periods of sitting, standing, walking, speaking, hearing, and hand/foot/eye coordination. Often including lifting, carrying, pushing, pulling, climbing, balancing, stooping, kneeling, crouching, and reaching.
- Must demonstrate self-initiative and motivation, with the ability to work independently and collaboratively within a team setting.
- Work schedule is subject to the requirements of the position and may regularly extend beyond the typical workweek.
- Proficient communication skills in English, both verbal and written, are essential, along with excellent interpersonal skills to interact effectively with the public.
The ideal candidate will be a self-starter and self-motivator who is able to work independently as well as in a team setting. Working hours are subject to the demands of the job and may frequently extend beyond a normal workweek.
This is an hourly non-exempt position in the Environmental Department that reports to the Recycling Foreman.
