Job DescriptionDescription:
The Medical Assistant works alongside the Physicians and Registered Nurses and performs routine administrative and clinical tasks in order to assist in providing exceptional patient care while maintaining all clinical aspects of the patient flow in a competent and efficient manner.
- Must possess the ability to manage the workload of assisting patients for a minimum of 3 physicians at any given time
- Must perform a “double check” to confirm that all related reports, labs, and other clinical documents are available on or in patient’s medical records, prior to their appointment
- Escort patients to exam rooms, interview patients, measure vital signs, including weight, blood pressure, pulse, temperature, and document all information, including current medications list, in patient’s chart
- Unwrap and/or change dressings on wounds, when appropriate and/or ordered by physician
- Assist the physician during the examination, when requested
- Perform clinical procedures under supervision of physician or nurse
- Prepare and administer medications and vaccines, as ordered and directed by physician
- Collect and prepare laboratory specimens for send out, (including providing demographic and insurance info, completed lab requisition-to include appropriate diagnosis codes) and promptly notifying appropriate lab for specimen pickup
- Explain treatment procedures and physician/nurse instructions to patients and or family members/caregivers
- Assist by entering electronically (and scheduling) physician ordered lab and x-ray studies
- Appropriately disposing of contaminated supplies, and sterilize medical instruments, when appropriate.
- Regularly empty Red biohazard bags from each exam room and dispose into large Biohazard receptacle for Hazardous Waste pick up
- Handles miscellaneous correspondence related to patient care or treatment plans. This includes managing lab and radiology results, Home Health documents and all prescription related issues.
- Communicating need for patient hospital admission to manager, if and when requested
- Provide home health and outpatient IV therapies, to the office Referral Coordinator
- Submits authorizations and prior authorizations to appropriate entities, following physician orders, precisely, anytime Referral Coordinator is not available.
- Maintain exam rooms and Infusion Center in a neat, clean and orderly fashion between each patient and at the end of each day.
- Stock exams-rooms daily with supplies, instruments and appropriate equipment
- Notify management of all supplies needed in order to maintain appropriate inventory and back stocking of clinical supplies and essentials.
- Call in prescriptions and prescription refills to pharmacies, ONLY when e-prescribing is not an option. All refills must be noted in the EHR in a timely manner and in a separate individual chart note. Each note must be entered with the appropriate physician name, and must include the prescription details, number of refills authorized, pharmacy name and telephone number, pharmacy employee or pharmacist’s name and must be signed off by the Medical Assistant.
- Perform general office duties such as answering telephones, responding to voice mails throughout the day, processing faxes-incoming and outgoing. ALL outgoing faxes must be sent electronically. No exceptions.
- Take telephone messages, consult physicians and provide feedback and answers to patients/physicians/pharmacy callers in a timely manner, always in the same day, whenever possible.
Requirements:
Education:
- High school diploma; (some college preferred)
- Medical Assistant Certification (REQUIRED)
- Phlebotomy Certificate, preferred
Experience:
- Five years as a backmoffice Medical assistant in a prior Medical Office experience, REQUIRED
- Knowledge of Healthcare insurance and health plan procedures
- Common knowledge of processes and procedures of private medical practices
- Familiarity with medical specialty
- Intermediate level of Medical terminology
- Accuracy in grammar, spelling, and punctuation, REQUIRED
- Knowledge and usage of electronic medical records, other computer programs and technologies which are specific to carrying out the duties and responsibilities of the job.
- Proficiency in using general office equipment, including computers, telephones, copiers and scanning equipment, in order to apply and promote the most efficient use of time and office processes.

- Ability to maintain effective and organized systems to ensure timely patient flow
- Ability to administer injections, and draw labs, (if phlebotomy certified).
