POSITION SUMMARY

A Staff Office Licensed Practical Nurse (LPN)/ Medical Assistant (MA) works under the general supervision of the Registered Nurse (RN) / Physician Practitioner, performs various patient care activities and related non-professional services necessary in caring for the personal needs and comfort of the patients. Assists in the delivery of patient care through the nursing process of assessment, diagnosing, planning, implementation, and evaluation with consideration of the aging process, human development stages and cultural diversity. Assists in the care and preparation of clinic/surgical patients in various clinic settings, minor treatment area. Collaborates with other professional disciplines to ensure effective and efficient patient care delivery and the achievement of desired patient outcomes.


ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Supports and promotes an environment conducive with the Mission, Vision, and Values of the hospital.
  • Delivers safe, high quality patient care.
  • Promotes a therapeutic relationship with patients and families.
  • Coordinates care of the clinic patients, including scheduling of patients for surgical procedures.
  • Assists with preauthorization of procedures as needed.
  • Collects and documents pertinent health data using appropriate assessment techniques using a systematic and ongoing process utilizing interventions appropriated for pediatric, adolescent, adult, and geriatric patients.

  • Makes clinical decisions and sets priorities related to workload management based on clinical knowledge and individual patient needs.
  • Gives appropriate pre-operative and post-operative instructions to patients and significant others.
  • Provides teaching material to patients and significant others pertinent to their situation and documents in the clinic record.
  • Assist with outpatient office procedures and follow-up care. May include off-site patient care.
  • Prepares minor treatment area as required for specific procedures.
  • Assist with washing and decontamination of all instruments.
  • Cleans and prepares instruments for sterilization, as needed.
  • Utilizes ongoing assessment data and notifies physician/surgeon of changes in patient’s condition in a timely and appropriate manner.
  • Check and maintain appropriate inventory for pharmacy and central supply items.
  • Maintain confidentiality of all patients, hospital, or physician related information.
  • Maintain orderly condition of assigned work area.
  • Is knowledgeable of general hospital and department specific policies and procedures.
  • Follow-up phone calls to patients.
  • Liaison fielding patient calls/questions.
  • Can manage wound care, dressing changes, etc. as delegated.
  • Other duties may be assigned and are subject to change with or without prior notice.

  • Maintain knowledge and skills necessary to communicate, teach and interact with patients, visitors, and staff in the following age groups: Infant, Pediatric/adolescent, Adult, and Geriatric
  • Ability to work well with a diverse work team.
  • Ability to work under pressure with time constraints.
  • Ability to concentrate.
  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.
  • Good mental health and emotional maturity.
  • Good personal grooming and hygiene.
  • Ability to acquire and maintain current knowledge in nursing practice.
  • Displays knowledge of sterile and non-sterile supplies, equipment, and procedures.
  • Demonstrates knowledge and practices of Universal Precautions.
  • Recognizes and respects the individual emotional, social, and cultural needs of Residents, including their religious beliefs.
  • Always preserves the dignity and respect of all patients.
  • Assists with daily, weekly, and monthly cleaning of work and storage areas.
  • Possession of a genuine interest and concern for patient population that is served.

Requirements:

EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE

  • Graduate of accredited school of licensed practical nursing (applicable for LPN).
  • Graduate of accredited Medical Assistant program (applicable for Medical Assistant).
  • Ability to pass specific competencies for this position.
  • Proficient oral and written communication.
  • 1 year office experience preferred.

CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS

  • Hold and maintain LPN Illinois Licensure or Medical Assistant certification, as applicable.
  • CPR certification or willing to obtain withing 30 days of employment.


PHYSICAL DEMANDS

  • Prolonged, extensive, or considerable standing and walking.
  • Required to climb, balance, stoop, and kneel.
  • Required to use arms, hands, and fingers for repetitive grasping, pulling, and pushing and feeling.
  • Frequently lift and/or move up to 25 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 50 pounds. Any workload exceeding 50 pounds will require assistance.
  • Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision, distance vision, color vision, and ability to adjust focus.


WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Works in well light, climate-controlled setting.
  • Room temperatures may be cool.
  • May be exposed to communicable diseases, hypodermic/IV needles, unpleasant sights, odors, and materials.
  • The noise level in the work environment is quiet to moderate.

Receives training and/or attends necessary meetings to meet the criteria as outlined in Hillsboro Health’s Corporate Compliance Plan and Code of Conduct. Understands the responsibilities related to compliance and knows how to contact the Corporate Compliance Officer should there be any instance of question or concern regarding fraud and/or abuse.
