Job Title: Director of Nursing (ASC)

Department: Clinical (ASC)

Immediate Supervisor Title: Chief Executive Officer

Job Supervisory Responsibilities: Supervises all clinical and support staff in the Ambulatory Surgery Center

General Summary:

A non-exempt position responsible for planning, directing, coordinating, and supervising the delivery of clinical care in the Ambulatory Surgery Center. Must be prepared to deal with evolving integrated health care delivery systems, technological innovations, an increasingly complex regulatory environment, restructuring of work, and more emphasis on quality outpatient procedural care. Accountable for assuming standards of patient care and standards of nursing practice are consistent throughout the Ambulatory Surgery Center.

Essential Job Responsibilities:

  1. Manages clinical department in the ASC with major focus on improving the business aspects of health care operations and the quality of the health care provided.
  2. Collaborates with administrative staff and physicians to optimize efficiency.
  3. Establishes and implements policies, objectives, and procedures for department. Reports on department results and outcomes.
  4. Participates in staff human resource planning and decisions, including hiring, training, supervising, and evaluating personnel and their work.
  5. Develops budgets including recommendations for equipment outlays. Ensures appropriate reimbursement by staying abreast of billing, collections, and payer matters as well as Medicare/Medicaid regulations.
  6. Coordinates activities with other clinical managers, administrative staff, and physicians.
  7. Oversees infection control and immunization programs (to include Hep B, TB, annual flu vaccine).
  8. Oversees scheduling of staff in accordance with flexing procedural schedule.
  9. Oversees quality improvement program to include data collection, aggregation and comparison to internal and external benchmarks.
  10. Oversees compliance to regulatory and accrediting body standards.
  11. Facilities management to include safety, maintenance and documenting that required verifications have been met (i.e., gases, generator, HVAC, etc.)
  12. Conducts routine drills to ensure appropriate Life Safety response. (i.e., fire, emergency response, weather drills, etc.)
  13. Other duties as assigned.

Education:

BSN or Baccalaureate degree in health-related field. Master's degree in health administration or business administration preferred. On-the-job management experience may be an acceptable substitute.

Experience:

Required: One year of progressive management experience, during which the qualities of competence of clinical practice, leadership and administrative abilities have been demonstrated. Must be self-directed in improving and acquiring the abilities and skills necessary to enhance job performance.

Preferred: Experience in Gastroenterology.

Other Requirements:

Current Georgia RN license in good standing. Preferred membership in SGNA.

Performance Requirements:

Knowledge:

  1. Knowledge of payment/reimbursement systems and government/legal regulations and requirements related to health care.
  2. Knowledge of health care delivery trends and implications for clinical specialty and for the medical practice.
  3. Knowledge of planning, budgeting, human resource management, and report development. Understanding of cost analysis techniques.
  4. Knowledge of AAAHC and Medicare regulations affecting ASC’s.

Skills:

  1. Skill in motivating others to positively impact their decisions, which requires strong leadership abilities using tact, diplomacy, flexibility, and communication techniques.
  2. Skill in using financial and information systems.
  3. Skill in restructuring work to make patient flow and other operational systems more efficient.

Abilities:

  1. Ability to make effective decisions by being open to different opinions.
  2. Ability to analyze contradictory information and solve problems effectively.
  3. Ability to analyze financial and other business data.
  4. Ability to, at a minimum, read, write and document English at a high school level.
  5. Ability to read numbers and perform basic arithmetic calculations.
  6. Ability to calculate and administer drug dosages and injections and measure results.
  7. Ability to read and interpret physicians’ orders and notes from other providers.
  8. Demands creativity, flexibility, and the ability to work under stress.
  9. Must communicate well – both verbally and in writing.

Equipment Operated:

Standard office equipment and supplies including blood pressure and pulse oximeter monitors, wall gases and suction equipment, thermometers, and all medical equipment used in gastroenterology procedures. May involve use of assistive devices such as walkers, wheelchairs, and oxygen tanks. Requires use of computer. Working use of Word, Excel and Powerpoint.

Work Environment:

Work is performed in the Ambulatory Surgery Center. Controlled lighting, acoustics, air quality, and temperature settings. Environmental hazards may be unpredictable including exposure to communicable diseases and biohazards.

Mental/Physical Requirements:

Considerable standing and walking to consult with coworkers and staff. Also involves sitting, lifting, turning, stooping, and reaching. Must hear and see well enough to obtain and document patient history and vital signs. Must see well enough to read reports and computer screens. High level of stress related to multiple clinical and administrative responsibilities.
