SUMMARY: The Training Specialist will work to enhance staff skills and knowledge across the organization. This position will develop and deliver training that addresses topics such as mental health, trauma-informed care, best practices for working with individuals experiencing homelessness, and effective community outreach strategies. The selected candidate will support staff in the application of evidence-based practices, ensuring consistency and quality in service delivery. Additionally, the Training Specialist will support staff in data collection efforts, promoting accurate and efficient tracking of outcomes and program impact.
- ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Develop curriculum and materials for workshops and training sessions focused on both hard skills and soft skills (e.g., communication, conflict resolution, Trauma Informed Care, De-Escalation, Compassion Fatigue);
- Lead workshops or group classes;
- Provide individualized coaching;
- Track participation and progress in training programs;
- Collect feedback from staff to evaluate the effectiveness of workshops and training sessions;
- Help raise awareness about the organization's educational programs;
- Attend training and professional development programs to stay informed on best practices for education and training in the context of homelessness.
- GENERAL EXPECTATIONS
- Develop goals, priorities and timelines on a regular basis, ensuring timely and efficient management and completion of all related tasks.
- Communicate and coordinate priorities, progress, workload, and challenges to the Manager of Clinical and Training Services on a regular basis.
- Inform leadership team and assist with urgent situations involving SAMMinistries’ clients or facilities.
- Share information that contributes to positive growth in programmatic practice and fundraising.
- Attend staff meetings and participate in organization‐wide planning activities.
- Handle other tasks as assigned by the Manager of Clinical and Training Services or the VP of Clinical and Supportive Services.
- Keep up to date on current programmatic research, trends, best practices and community needs by reading industry publications and attending conferences, workshops, and seminars.
- Undertake all activities with the highest ethical standards.
EDUCATION AND/OR EXPERIENCE
Should possess a Bachelor’s degree in social work, social services, education, behavioral health, or a related field. A strong background in working with vulnerable populations, particularly those experiencing homelessness or facing mental health challenges, is highly preferred. Previous experience in staff training, education, or program development is essential, along with a deep understanding of trauma-informed care and evidence-based practices. Familiarity with data collection and evaluation methods, as well as the ability to facilitate workshops and presentations, will be key to success in this role. A commitment to continuous learning and professional development is also important to stay current with best practices and emerging trends in the field. Must understand and use approaches and models aligned with SAMMinistries’ practices, including Housing First and Trauma Informed Care. Experience with principles and approaches of Harm Reduction and Motivational Interviewing.
QUALIFICATIONS
To perform this job successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily. The requirements listed below are representative of the knowledge, skill, and/or ability required. Previous case management experience and working knowledge of local resources and social services available are highly desirable. Excellent time management skills and the ability to effectively communicate both orally and written is essential. A valid Texas Driver’s License, a reliable motor vehicle, and liability insurance is also needed. The individual must have a high level of energy, creativity and flexibility.
LANGUAGE SKILLS
It is imperative that the person in this position possess and demonstrate excellent written and verbal communication skills and have a high level of energy and ambition. Must be able to read, analyze, and interpret common scientific and technical journals, grant and financial reports, legal documents and/or governmental regulations. Must also be able to respond to common inquiries and complaints from clients, regulatory agencies, partners, and other others in the community. Must be able to effectively present information to the leadership team and Board of Directors, staff, and the general public. Ability to speak Spanish is a plus.
REASONING ABILITY
The case manager must possess excellent judgment and the ability to handle crises appropriately. Case Manager must be sensitive to the dynamics associated with homelessness and other trauma.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Must have a valid Texas Drivers’ License, a good driving record, reliable transportation and proper insurance coverage on automobile used for work. Monthly mileage reimbursed for applicable and documented work related mileage. Minimum of Associate or Independent Licensure Required. Licensed social worker or equivalent licensure desirable.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Ability to operate a computer, copier, fax machine, and a telephone with intercom. Ability to work in Microsoft Windows XP and Office Suite applications; a willingness to learn new programs and applications is essential; ability to follow instructions, think conceptually, set priorities and interface effectively with staff; ability to coordinate work requirements and to handle several projects simultaneously; ability to work conscientiously without supervision; must have excellent written, verbal and interpersonal communication skills and public speaking ability; ability to maintain strict confidentiality and interact well with all constituencies; ability to work independently but also be flexible in providing assistance to the "team" as needed.
PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The physical demands described here are representative of those that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job. Physical demands inherent in this position include but are not limited to sitting for long periods of time, use of computer equipment, operation of a motor vehicle, walking, climbing stairs, bending, stretching and lifting up to 20 lbs. WORK ENVIRONMENT
The work environment characteristics described here are representative of those an employee encounters while performing the essential functions of this job. The work environment for this position is primarily indoors, with occasional outdoor activity required for supervision/participation in community events. Operating an agency motor vehicle may also be required on occasion. Reasonable accommodations may be made to enable individuals with disabilities to perform the essential functions. Requires some weekend and evening hours. The noise level in the work environment is usually moderate.
