Position Title: Pavement Maintenance
Location: Dallas, TX, 75261
Duration: 6 months
Work Schedule: Monday - Friday, 10 hours per day, schedule can rotate
General Summary: Under the general supervision of the Pavement Supervisor, operate light and heavy-duty equipment as well as use power and hand tools to repair concrete and asphalt surfaces such as runways, taxiways, roadways, and parking lots, mix materials, and coordinate the preparation of excavated areas. Builds concrete structures; digs trenches and hauls dirt. Operate snow and ice removal equipment during winter weather events. Work may be assigned and monitored by a lead person
Responsibilities for this position include, but are not limited to:
- Work on a crew to excavate, repair, and maintain concrete and asphalt surfaces, including runways, taxiways, public roadways, and parking lots.
- Example work includes but is not limited to:
- Spall and pothole repair
- Asphalt mill and overlay
- Saw cut, jackhammer, replace rebar, and pour back concrete
- Concrete sidewalk and curb repair
- Use of epoxy resin or polymer concrete for roadway and bridge repair
- Mixing of concrete and admixtures
- Finish surfaces with manual and powered hand tools and equipment
- Replace, repair, and maintain concrete and asphalt joints.
- Repair and maintenance of concrete and asphalt cracks.
- Repair and maintenance of storm drains and flumes.
- Repair and maintenance of guardrails and attenuators.
- Repair and maintenance of fencing, razor wire, and barbed wire.
- Operates the following types of powered or mobile equipment and vehicles in maintaining concrete and asphalt surfaces:
- 2 1/2 and 5-ton dump trucks
- Backhoe, grader, dozer, track loader, box blade, and rubber tire loader
- Crack sealing machine
- Asphalt laydown machine
- Epoxy resin concrete machine
- Concrete mixer, jackhammer, concrete saw
- Forklift, skid steer, street sweeper
- Set up and maintain traffic control devices such as cones, barrels, and arrow boards to create a safe work site.
- Set up and move traffic barriers such as concrete and water-filled barricades.
- Be on call to respond to emergency situations requiring assistance from the pavements shop.
- Clean, organize, and restock inventory of materials in a warehouse, such as pallets of concrete and cold patch bags.
- Cleans, checks fluid and gas levels, adds fluid and gas, and lubricates vehicles and equipment.

Minimum requirements:
- Completion of high school curriculum or equivalent; or one (1) year of experience; or any equivalent combination of education and/or experience may be substituted.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a valid Class B commercial driver's license in a predetermined time frame by the supervisor.
- Possession of, or ability to obtain, a flagger certification by ATSSA or equivalent in a predetermined time frame by the supervisor.
- Must be able to work rotating shift assignments.
- Must pass a medical physical examination.
- This is a DOT-designated and airport-designated safety-sensitive position as defined in the client airport's drug and alcohol administrative policy and procedure. Applicants selected for this position will be required to pass drug and alcohol tests prior to employment and to submit to drug and alcohol screening on a random basis during the length of their employment in the safety-sensitive position.
Required knowledge, skills, and abilities:
- Knowledge of the hazards and safety precautions in working with hot asphalt mix and operating road machinery and equipment.
- Knowledge of the techniques and practices in finishing concrete and asphalt surfaces.
- Knowledge of proper lifting techniques.
- Ability to operate a variety of powered and mobile equipment to maintain paved areas.
- Ability to operate manual and powered tools.
- Ability to clean, check fluid levels, add fluid as required, and lubricate assigned vehicles and equipment.
- Ability to understand and follow oral instructions and to communicate clearly over two-way radio, including ground control for AOA operations.
- Ability to perform basic mathematical calculations such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, and division.
- Ability to drive in the aircraft movement area and/or obtain certification to drive in the aircraft movement area.
Desirable:
- Possession of a valid Class A commercial driver's license
- Previous experience in concrete or asphalt repair and finishing.
- Training in a related field.
Special requirement: This is a designated essential employee position as defined in the client airport's categories and classifications administrative policy and procedure. An essential employee is one whose attendance is required to maintain airport operations during an emergency or inclement weather situation
Effort:
- Works in a maintenance environment.
- Works outdoors for extended periods in inclement weather and in conditions containing hot asphalt, dust, fumes, and noise.
- Operates powered and mobile pavement maintenance equipment.
- Operates equipment with hand and foot-operated controls using eye/hand/foot coordination.
- Performs manual labor frequently exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 50 pounds and occasionally exerting forces equivalent to lifting up to 100 pounds.
- Stands or walks for prolonged periods of time.
- Works in awkward positions such as kneeling, stooping, or squatting.
- Uses near-visual acuity in reading written documents.
- Uses far-visual acuity in driving vehicles/equipment.
- Uses hand/arm manipulation in tool and equipment operation.
- Exchanges information by telephone, e-mail, all radios, including AOA ground control (all frequencies), and in person.
- Drives to locations on airport property.
