Position Overview
We are seeking a skilled Manual Machinist to produce high-precision components and maintain rotating equipment in a fast-paced manufacturing environment. The Manual Machinist will set up and operate manual lathes, mills, and grinders to meet tight tolerances and quality standards, perform routine spindle and motor repairs, and support aerospace and high-speed machinery applications. The ideal candidate is detail-oriented, safety-conscious, and experienced with precision measurement and maintenance of bearing systems and rotating equipment.
Key Responsibilities
- Set up and operate manual lathes, manual milling machines and precision grinders (including cylindrical and surface grinders) to produce parts to specification.
- Interpret engineering drawings, blueprints and GD&T to determine machining requirements and acceptable tolerances.
- Select, install and adjust tooling, fixtures and cutting parameters for manual machining operations.
- Perform precision measurement and inspection using micrometers, calipers, dial indicators and other metrology tools to verify part accuracy.
- Perform routine maintenance, diagnostics and repairs on motors, spindles, and rotating equipment; replace bearings and perform balancing as required.
- Troubleshoot machining issues and provide corrective actions to maintain consistent part quality and reduce scrap.
- Work with engineering and quality teams to support process improvements, tooling design and first article inspections, especially for aerospace components.
- Maintain clean, organized work areas and follow all safety procedures, lockout/tagout and company policies.
- Document production data, maintenance actions and inspection results accurately in work orders and logs.
- Train and mentor junior machinists and apprentices as required to develop shop capability.
Qualifications
- 3+ years of proven experience as a Manual Machinist or equivalent role in a precision manufacturing environment (aerospace experience preferred).
- Proficiency with manual lathes, manual mills, cylindrical grinding and precision grinding techniques.
- Experience with motor repair, spindle repair and maintenance of rotating equipment, including bearing replacement and balancing.
- Familiarity with high-speed machinery, bearing systems and Tool & Die practices.
- Strong ability to read blueprints, engineering drawings and apply GD&T principles.
- Hands-on experience with precision measurement tools (micrometers, calipers, indicators) and basic inspection equipment.
- Working knowledge of appropriate cutting tools, speeds/feeds and setup/fixturing for various materials.
- Mechanical aptitude and problem-solving skills with the ability to troubleshoot machine and process issues.
- High school diploma or equivalent; vocational/technical training or apprenticeship in machining, mechanical maintenance or related field preferred.
- Commitment to workplace safety, quality standards and continuous improvement initiatives (AS9100 or similar experience is a plus).
