Job Description

Job Description Industrial Compressed Air Field Service Specialist

Primary service area: Fredericksburg / Stafford / Williamsburg / Petersburg, VA

A day in this role

You start your day reviewing the work queue and setting up precision instruments for onsite diagnostics. By mid-morning, you're installing or commissioning rotary screw, reciprocating, Centac, or ECC air compressors and related components (dryers, filtration, cooling). Afternoons often bring complex troubleshooting: interpreting readings, consulting OEM operations and parts manuals across multiple brands, and restoring uptime for customers who count on mission-critical compressed air. You wrap up by documenting findings, coaching site personnel, and closing out accurate reports and expenses.

What you will do

  • Install, commission, maintain, and perform field repairs on Ingersoll Rand equipment at customer locations, ensuring work is completed to specification and safety standards.
  • Stay current on installation, service, and repair practices for rotary screw, reciprocating, Centac, ECC, and auxiliary compressed air system components.
  • Coach customers, prospects, field sales, and service trainees; translate technical concepts into practical know-how.
  • Operate independently to diagnose faults, recommend corrective actions, and deliver clear written and/or verbal updates to the factory.
  • Demonstrate unwavering integrity in all business matters.
  • Communicate concisely and logically about service work; maintain exemplary documentation.
  • Produce detailed, legible service reports suitable for customer billing.
  • Submit accurate weekly timecards and expense reports; responsibly manage company funds, credit cards, and (if assigned) a company vehicle.

Qualifications

  • 2–5 years of experience troubleshooting industrial/commercial mechanical systems; background with compressed air systems, centrifugal technologies, and controls is a plus. Experience starting up and servicing rotary and centrifugal compressors, dryers, cooling towers, and filtration is welcomed.
  • High school diploma or equivalent.
  • Valid driver’s license held for at least 12 months with no major or frequent violations, including DUI within the past 5 years, hit & run, license suspension, reckless/careless driving, or multiple smaller infractions or preventable collisions within the last 3 years.

Core strengths

  • Working knowledge of Microsoft Office and general PC skills.
  • Comfort using mobile/handheld devices (smartphone, iPad) and networked systems in the field.
  • Strong customer-facing abilities: communication, negotiation, and conflict resolution.
  • Cost-conscious travel planning and execution.
  • Mechanical aptitude to learn, diagnose, and troubleshoot compressor systems and machinery using precision measuring tools.

Preferred background

  • Education in Electrical/Electronic Technology or HVAC, with exposure to AC/DC circuits, schematics, motors/controls, PLCs, HVAC electricity and controls, refrigeration systems, and/or refrigerant certification. Military or equivalent mechanical experience is a plus. Candidates with comparable skills but no formal program will be considered.
  • EPA 608 / F-GAS 303/2008/CE/ISHRAE certification preferred (refrigeration experience/certification is a plus).

Work environment

  • Operate in mechanical rooms and industrial spaces with high noise, extreme weather, elevated work areas, and high-voltage exposure compliant with NFPA or equivalent standards.
  • Role is physically demanding: frequent use of hands and fingers; walking, stooping, kneeling; and routine lifting/moving of loads consistent with company safety policy.

Travel and scheduling

  • Occasional training travel: 1–2 trips per year, approximately one week each (about 5–10%).
  • Participate in an on-call rotation with local technicians for after-hours or weekend emergencies; evening/weekend work may be required during on-call weeks.
