Job Summary:

Under general supervision from the Head Stonemason, this person performs masonry repairs, preservation, restoration and new construction involving the masonry fabric of the various Cathedral facilities.


Term of Appointment
This position is established as a term-limited appointment with an initial duration dependent upon the completion of the Earthquake Project The role will be subject to periodic assessment throughout the term, including formal performance reviews and ongoing evaluation of organizational needs. Continuation beyond the stated term is not guaranteed and will be determined based on performance, funding, and institutional priorities at the time of review.


Duties and Responsibilities:

· Performs masonry repairs and maintenance such as replacing deteriorated mortar and caulking, and removal and replacement of various types of stone and brick.

· Installs masonry patching and restoration materials.

· Applies masonry coating and cleaning materials.

· Cuts and shapes all types of stone for installation.

· Sets all types of stone; occasional brick and block laying.

· Carves stone sculptures and other figures as needed. Repairs damaged stone carvings as needed.

· Carves inscriptions on columbarium closure stones and memorial tablets.

· Drills and installs anchoring systems into various types of masonry surfaces.

· Builds and works on scaffolding.

· Performs masonry surveys and assessments of Cathedral facilities.

· Carries out security sweeps of the Cathedral during special events.

· Recommends supplies, materials and equipment for purchase in advance of critical need.

· Safeguards Cathedral owned tools, equipment, materials and supplies used in assigned activities.

· Utilizes various tools of the trade such as hand tools, masonry tools, pneumatic cutting and carving tools, and diamond blade saws and grinders.

· Operates service vehicles such as pickup trucks and a small dump truck.

· Interacts with immediate supervisor, co-workers, school employees, electricians, carpenters, engineers, grounds workers and contractors.

· Utilizes diagrams, blueprints, shop drawings, architectural renderings and work orders to repair, install and maintain the masonry fabric of Cathedral facilities.

· Performs other related duties as assigned.

Requirements:

Minimum Qualifications:

· High school graduate or equivalent with vocational/technical school training in stone masonry and restoration, or any equivalent combination of training and experience which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.

· Must have a valid driver's license and good driving record.

· Must be able to operate pickup trucks and small dump truck safely.


Knowledge / Abilities

· Thorough knowledge in the practices, methods, procedures, materials and tools used for stone and masonry construction and other types of stone and masonry repair and restoration.

· Knowledge of the physical properties of different types of stone and other masonry materials.

· Knowledge of mortars, sealants, coatings and other masonry finishes.

· Stone cutting, shaping and carving abilities.

· Knowledge of rigging and hoisting techniques.

· Scaffold building abilities.

· Knowledge of architectural drawing, patterns and templates.

· An aesthetic sense in choosing mortar, stone and other masonry materials in keeping with existing architectural features of the PECF facilities.

· Familiarity with computers and ability to work with electronic mail, word processing and spreadsheet programs is desirable.

· Knowledge of the occupational and safety precautions of the trade.

· Knowledge of trade terminology.

· Knowledge of the proper and safe use of equipment and machinery necessary to complete assignments.

· Ability to follow detailed oral and written instructions.

· Ability to perform manual work requiring physical strength and agility.

· Ability to work from work orders, blueprints, diagrams, architectural renderings and plans.

· Ability to work from direction of immediate supervisor.

· Ability to anticipate needed supplies, materials, tools and equipment needed for project completion.

· Ability to speak, understand, and read English fluently.


Working Conditions

· Work is performed indoors and outdoors with occasional exposure to discomforting environmental conditions such as heat, cold, humidity, electrical hazards, wetness and heights.

· Moderate physical exertion is required to carry heavy objects weighing up to 50 lbs.

· This position requires prolonged sitting, standing, walking, reaching, twisting, turning, kneeling, bending, and stooping in the performance of daily services.

· Job requires operation of a vehicle for completion of daily duties.

· This position requires frequent climbing of scaffolding and access to areas that are designated as service access only.

· This position requires periodic work outside normal business hours and a need to be “on call” with ability to respond promptly in the event of off-hour emergencies.

· Required to climb ladders, stoop, or navigate confined spaces.

Salary is set at $75,000 annual salary commensurate to experience and qualifications. This position is eligible for full time benefits.
