CBIZ Talent & Compensation Solutions is assisting our growing client in their search for a Construction Controller role in Amarillo, TX.

Job Overview:

The Hands-On Construction Controller is responsible for overseeing the financial management and accounting operations of our construction company. This role involves managing all aspects of accounting, including the use of the percentage of completion method for project accounting. The ideal candidate will have extensive experience in the construction industry, strong analytical skills, and the ability to work collaboratively with project managers and other stakeholders.

Key Responsibilities:

  1. Financial Management and Reporting:
    • Oversee the preparation of financial statements, budgets, forecasts, and management reports.
    • Ensure timely and accurate month-end, quarter-end, and year-end closing processes.
    • Develop and maintain financial models to support business decisions.
  2. Percentage of Completion Accounting:
    • Implement and manage the percentage of completion method for revenue recognition on long-term construction contracts.
    • Monitor project progress and costs, ensuring accurate revenue recognition and matching of costs with revenue.
    • Work closely with project managers to review project status and update forecasts.
  3. Accounts Payable and Receivable:
    • Manage accounts payable and accounts receivable processes to ensure timely payments and collections.
    • Perform account reconciliations and resolve any discrepancies.
  4. Cash Flow Management:
    • Monitor and manage cash flow to ensure adequate liquidity for operational needs.
    • Prepare cash flow forecasts and manage relationships with financial institutions.
  5. Job Costing and Project Analysis:
    • Implement job costing systems and processes to track project costs and profitability.
    • Analyze project performance and provide insights to improve profitability and cost control.
  6. Compliance and Internal Controls:
    • Ensure compliance with GAAP, federal, state, and local regulations.
    • Develop, implement, and maintain internal control policies and procedures.
  7. Team Leadership and Development:
    • Lead and mentor the accounting team, fostering a culture of continuous improvement and professional development.
    • Collaborate with other departments to support overall business objectives.
  8. Systems and Process Improvement:
    • Evaluate and improve accounting systems, processes, and controls to enhance efficiency and accuracy.
    • Lead the implementation of new accounting software and technology solutions.

Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree in Accounting required; CPA or CMA preferred.
  • Minimum of 7-10 years of progressive accounting experience, with at least 5 years in a construction company.
  • Strong knowledge of construction accounting principles, including percentage of completion method.
  • Proficiency in accounting software (e.g., NetSuite, Sage 300 Construction or Foundation Software) and Microsoft Office Suite, particularly Excel.
  • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills.
  • Strong leadership and communication skills.
  • Ability to work independently and manage multiple priorities in a fast-paced environment.
  • Detail-oriented with a high level of accuracy and integrity.
