Job Description

Position Overview

This role is for an experienced CNC setup machinist, not a machine operator. The position owns the setup process end-to-end—from print review and program edits to first-article approval and production handoff. You’ll work closely with engineering and shop-floor personnel and are trusted to make decisions that impact quality, efficiency, and repeatability.

If you’re tired of roles limited to loading parts and pressing cycle start, this position offers real responsibility, autonomy, and respect for your experience.

What “True Setup Responsibility” Means

  • Review prints and define the complete setup approach
  • Edit and optimize existing CNC programs
  • Select tooling, fixturing, and inspection methods
  • Prove out first articles and release jobs to production
  • Troubleshoot machining and dimensional issues
  • Recommend and implement process improvements

Programming Expectations (Important)

  • Writing CNC programs from scratch is not required
  • Comfort editing and adjusting existing programs is expected
  • Programming skill growth is supported for those interested
  • CAM training available if desired
  • OEM machine training provided as needed

(Programming growth is encouraged, not required.)

Key Responsibilities

  • Perform full machine setups on Okuma lathes and mills
  • Establish tooling, offsets, fixturing, and inspection plans
  • Read and interpret blueprints and GD&T
  • Set up and use gauges and inspection equipment
  • Prove out first articles and support production launch
  • Collaborate with engineering and operators for smooth production handoff
  • Troubleshoot machining, tooling, and dimensional issues
  • Maintain a clean, safe, and organized work environment
  • Bring a professional, positive presence to the shop floor

Required Qualifications

  • 10+ years of CNC setup experience
  • Strong hands-on experience with Okuma controls
  • Ability to edit CNC programs (lathe & mill)
  • Strong inspection and tolerance-holding skills
  • Self-directed, dependable, and detail-oriented
  • Strong communication skills and team-oriented mindset

Preferred Qualifications

  • Steel or heavy-industrial machining experience
  • Experience supporting both production and short-run work
