Job Summary:

The dental hygienist plays a vital role in promoting oral health within the community. Working under the supervision of a licensed dentist, the dental hygienist is responsible for delivering preventive dental services, educating patients on oral hygiene, and supporting the overall mission of the FQHC to improve access to comprehensive healthcare.

Duties/Responsibilities:


Patient Care & Education:

  1. Perform routine dental cleanings, including scaling and polishing teeth.
  2. Apply preventive treatments, including sealants and fluoride.
  3. Take and evaluate x-rays for signs of dental disease.
  4. Examine patients' mouths for oral diseases such as gingivitis, cavities, and other abnormalities.
  5. Conduct periodontal screenings and charting to assess gum health.
  6. Educate patients on proper oral hygiene techniques (e.g., brushing, flossing) and nutrition to prevent oral disease.

Infection Control & Sterilization:

  1. Adhere to all infection control protocols and FQHC standards.
  2. Assemble and sterilize instruments, ensuring compliance with safety and health regulations.
  3. Clean and maintain treatment rooms before and after patient visits.

Administrative Tasks:

  1. Accurately document patient care and treatment plans in the EHR system.
  2. Monitor supply inventories and place orders for hygiene materials.
  3. Maintain cleanliness and orderliness of treatment areas and equipment.

Community Outreach:

  1. Participate in outreach programs to educate the community on oral health, furthering the FQHC’s mission of improving healthcare access.

Other Duties:

  1. Stay updated with industry advancements and complete continuing education as required.
  2. Perform additional tasks as assigned to support clinic operations.

Qualifications, Knowledge, Skills

  1. Experience working with underserved or diverse patient populations is highly preferred.
  2. Familiarity with FQHC guidelines and a commitment to community-focused healthcare.
  3. Proficiency in electronic health records (EHR) systems.
  4. Strong communication and interpersonal skills, with the ability to provide culturally competent care.
  5. Compassionate and patient-centered approach, with a focus on health equity.
  6. Ability to work effectively in a collaborative, multidisciplinary team environment.
  7. Experience in a public health, community health, or FQHC setting.
  8. Knowledge of oral health disparities and the social determinants of health.
  9. Bilingual skills relevant to the community served preferred.

Education and Experience:

  • Associate's or Bachelor's degree in Dental Hygiene from an accredited program.
  • Current state licensure as a Dental Hygienist.
