ROLE OVERVIEW
Reporting to the Executive Principal, the Vice Principal’s primary job is to drive academic and character outcomes for students. We expect our Vice Principals to focus 75% of their time on instructional leadership, specifically all of the activities involved in leading and improving teaching and learning to drive student achievement. At KIPP, we also expect our Vice Principals to build lasting and sustainable organizations by developing a pipeline of future Vice Principals and creating systems for the ongoing development of school staff. The Vice Principal is responsible for developing his/her successor and the leadership capacity of his/her staff.
Essential functions of the job may include but are not limited to the following:
Student Achievement
- Support and communicate KIPP Memphis regional and school goals that lead to students on a path to and through college.
- Ensure the academic program meets or exceeds yearly student outcome goals as defined by the KIPP Memphis Regional Office.
- Plan and prioritize time and resources to achieve annual student goals.
Instructional Leadership
- Develop instructional leaders to provide rigorous and high quality instructional strategies that drive student achievement
- Lead analysis of and develop teachers’ ability to analyze student data to identify strategies that will move students toward mastery
- Regularly observe and coach leaders to ensure they are providing high-impact, actionable and bite-sized feedback to teachers on a weekly basis
- Provide whole-school professional development workshops that drive highest-impact improvements in teacher practice
Operational Leadership
- Support the budget development process with final approval from the Chiefs of the Region.
- Manage the Director of School Operations in overseeing routine facilities maintenance.
- Oversee management of school records and resources as necessary.
- Ensure compliance of local, state, and federal laws and regulations.
- Foster a school climate that supports both student and staff success and promotes respect and appreciation for all students, staff and parents.
Personnel
- Cultivate a diverse, high-potential leadership pipeline (from teacher leader to AP to successor).
- Develop leadership team members by teaching and insisting that they are true owners of the work and coaching and assigning stretch activities
- Retain diverse, highly-effective staff
- Cultivate an environment in the school in which staff and students from diverse backgrounds and perspectives can succeed.
Community Partnerships
- Serve as liaisons between teachers, parents and the community.
- Ensure parents feel welcome
- Build and maintain trust and relationships with parents
- Identify most active parents as key partners in understanding the student family experience and organizing other parents support
- Have a clear system in place to listen to and address parent concerns
- Build friends - engage key community leaders and decision-makers (e.g. through hosting tours and other events) to determine how we can partner together in support of KIPP students and families
- Exhibit a high degree of professionalism in all elements of this position, while serving as a contributing member of KIPP Memphis Collegiate Schools and Community and a dedicated role model for other employees.

Requirements:
QUALIFICATIONS:
Required:
- Requires a Bachelor’s degree (Master’s degree, preferred) in educational administration or supervision from an accredited college or university.
- Active Tennessee certification in Administration required.
- Requires 6 to 8 years of successful teaching experience with demonstrated leadership experience.
- 3-to-5-years' experience as a school administrator
Preferred:
- Experience working in an urban community

- Instructional Leadership: Deep understanding of appropriate application and differentiation of high-leverage instructional strategies (e.g. make kids sweat, pacing, stretch it, etc.) based on comprehension of child development and pedagogy
- Achievement Orientation: Demonstrated resilience and focus on student outcomes
- Interpersonal Skills: Excellent human relations skills and ability to establish and maintain successful cooperative working relationship with appropriate school communities, and school-based and central office staffs
- Relationship Building: Ability to develop effective working relationships with students, staff, and the community.
- Communication: Ability to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing.
Other Qualifications
Satisfactory criminal records check, pre-hire and annually thereafter, if applicable. Must be eligible to work in the United States and provide work authorization. Occasional travel to KIPP Memphis campuses as required.
Physical Requirements
Regularly required to repeatedly and for extended periods of time sit, stand, walk, talk, hear, operate a computer, hand-held learning devices and other office equipment, reach with hands and arms, and must occasionally lift and/or move up to 10 pounds.
