Principal Duties, Expectations, and Responsibilities


Reporting to the Vision Clinic Manager, the Optician's primary responsibility is to provide patients with optical services. The Optician will assist patients in selecting eyewear, interpret prescriptions, and ensure the proper fitting of glasses and contact lenses. Additionally, the Optician will educate and inform patients on eyewear care and the benefits of various lens options. The following statements for this position reflect only some specific responsibilities and are considered necessary to describe the principal functions of the job as identified and shall not be considered a detailed description of all duties required that may be inherent in the position:

  • Assists patients with the selection and dispensing of eyeglasses. Frame and lens selection is carefully performed, taking into account facial features, while also considering any physical or lifestyle limitations.
  • Takes accurate lens measurements. Ensures that eyeglass prescription and measurements are precisely manufactured before dispensing eyeglasses.
  • When necessary, may be asked to perform pre-testing (case history, auto-refraction, visual acuity, and any auxiliary testing requested). Demonstrates proper knowledge and use of ophthalmic equipment.
  • Troubleshoots eyeglass problems. Provides helpful solutions to resolve complaints about eyeglasses. If unable to assist patient any further, will call upon a more experienced Optician or the Vision Services Manager to ultimately attain patient satisfaction.
  • Supports and implements the organization’s vision, mission and values.
  • Provides excellent customer service. Establishes rapport with patients, and answers questions and concerns to their satisfaction.
  • Works well in assisting Optometrist/Ophthalmologist with patient care.
  • Order, verify, and dispense eyeglass lenses, frames, and contact lenses.
  • Collaborate with clinical staff to ensure efficient clinic operations.
  • Maintains accurate documentation in patient medical records-either in paper and EMR.
  • Provides translation services and assists patients in understanding any instructions pertinent to their care.
  • Must be highly organized and capable of managing optical orders and maintaining accurate records within the system
  • Follow regulatory standards, including patient confidentiality and safety protocols.
  • Complies with organizational policies and procedures.
  • Adhere to HIPAA regulations and other relevant laws to protect patient privacy and confidentiality in all communications.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the executive leadership and administration.

Requirements:

Education, Certification, and Experience Requirements

  • High School graduate or equivalency required.
  • Experience working in the optical field. Working with Private and Medical Insurances
  • ABO Certification preferred.
  • Experience using computers, use of electronic medical records (EMR).

Language Requirements

  • Spanish speaking required.
