State Requirements - Education, Licensure, and Certification
- Bachelor's degree or higher from an accredited institution
- Valid Colorado teaching license with a Special Education endorsement, issued by the Colorado Department of Education (CDE)
- Passing score on the appropriate Praxis Special Education content exam (coursework alternative is not permitted for special education endorsements in Colorado)
- Completion of an approved Educator Preparation Program (EPP), including required student teaching or practicum
- Background check through the Colorado Bureau of Investigation required
Typical Job Duties
- Develop, implement, and monitor Individualized Education Programs (IEPs)
- Provide specialized instruction to students with disabilities in a school-based setting
- Collaborate with general education teachers, related service providers, and school staff
- Track and document student progress toward IEP goals
- Communicate with families regarding student progress and IEP updates
- Participate in IEP meetings and multidisciplinary team meetings
- Adapt curriculum and materials to meet diverse student needs
- Maintain accurate records in compliance with district, state, and federal requirements.
