Job Description

I. General Summary

Under general supervision, performs and may advise and coordinate others performing carpentry, masonry, and other construction work with a specific focus on fire safety. Evaluating and repairing fire barriers, fire/smoke control systems and dampers.

II. Principal Responsibilities and Tasks

The following statements are intended to describe the general nature and level of work being performed by people assigned to this classification. They are not to be construed as an exhaustive list of all job duties performed by personnel so classified.

1. Plans carpentry and masonry work
2. Performs carpentry, masonry, and fire barrier repairs and inspections in accordance with departmental procedures that require a high level of craft skill.
A. Lays out work in the field from two-dimensional drawings, manufactures instructions etc.
B. Inspects and verifies proper sealing and construction of fire barriers, smoke barriers, and penetrations through such barriers.
C. Repairs fire barrier penetrations with a combination of approved fire-stop materials, wall repairs, and masonry work as required.
D. Inspects and verifies proper functioning of fire/smoke damper installations, including electronic dampers.
3. May lead other skilled tradespersons of equivalent or lesser skill when the work requires their participation. Is responsible for advising others regarding the work plan, means and methods, and quality standards.
4. May perform general maintenance on miscellaneous hospital equipment such as wheelchairs, stretchers and desks as needed in accordance with departmental procedures.
5. Maintains required records, reports, work orders, and miscellaneous information as to document work assignments, as required, in accordance with departmental procedures.
6. Maintains a clean, safe and orderly work environment in accordance with departmental procedures and UMMS safe work practices.
A. Assures proper care in using tools, equipment and supplies.
7. Maintains established hospital and department policies and procedures, objectives, regarding quality assurance, safety, environmental and infection control. Applies/observes department procedures regarding appropriate, safe, efficient, and effective use of materials and time.
8. Communicates with patient care personnel regarding potential maintenance problems.

Qualifications

III. Education and Experience

1. High School Diploma or equivalent (GED) is required.
2. Ten (10) years general maintenance experience, including carpentry, is required.
3. Experience in facilities management in health care settings is preferred.

IV. Knowledge, Skills and Abilities
1. Expert knowledge of carpentry, painting, dry wall, suspended ceiling system, floor installation, minor roofing, finishes, and the operation of the basic tools of the trade. Knowledge of equipment, such as, tractor, saw, metal grinder, sander, drill, and various types of spray equipment.
2. Ability to read and interpret standard construction documents (drawings and specifications) and manufacturer’s instructions and follow instructions accurately, timely and effectively. Ability to read technical equipment operation manuals.
3. Effective verbal and written communication skills are required to work with management, skilled tradesmen, and various hospital and administrative staff.
4. Ability to work with and train others in the proper use of potentially hazardous tools and power equipment, safely and effectively.
5. Ability to use the Microsoft suite of products, including Outlook, Word, and Excel
6. Knowledge of applicable state and federal fire and safety codes.

V. Certifications
1. Must be certified to install Hilti fire-protection products including firestop caulk and firestop bricks.

Compensation
