The primary role of the Phlebotomist I is to assist in performing various duties, troubleshoot issues, provide training, and make workflow recommendations. This position involves collecting and storing specimens in accordance with established procedures and standards.
Responsibilities
Key Responsibilities:
- Perform venipuncture and other specimen collection procedures (e.g., urine, fecal) with clarity and professionalism.
- Accurately label, centrifuge, split, and freeze specimens as required by test protocols.
- Match laboratory requisition forms to specimen tubes and verify test orders for accuracy.
- Maintain and update patient records with precision and confidentiality.
- Package and store specimens at appropriate temperatures to ensure integrity during transport.
- Demonstrate proficiency with straight and butterfly needle techniques.
- Execute physician orders accurately and in a timely manner.
- Decontaminate equipment and maintain cleanliness of the work area.
- Comply with OSHA and DEP regulations and attend required annual training sessions.
- Respond to telephone inquiries and relay laboratory results as needed.
Essential Skills
- Proficiency in phlebotomy and blood draws.
- Experience with pediatric and geriatric patients.
- 1+ years of recent phlebotomy experience, within the past 6 months.
- Ability to handle a volume of 30+ draws per day and manage difficult sticks.
- Excellent customer service skills.
Additional Skills & Qualifications
- 2+ years of experience is advantageous.
- Strong customer service skills.
Work Environment
The position is based in a large Patient Service Center (PSC) located in Aiken, SC. The work schedule is from 8 AM to 5 PM, Monday through Friday. The phlebotomist is expected to perform 25 to 40 draws per day and will be on their feet for 8 to 8 ½ hours each day. The work involves interacting with a diverse range of patients, including pediatric and geriatric. The role is team-based, and training will occur at PSC locations for 1 to 2 weeks.
Pay and Benefits
The pay range for this position is $16.00 - $18.50/hr.
